Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955736). Heading Home is a new, easy swing number for junior big band. This was originally a song and so essentially has a verse-refrain form. All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.

By Joe Procopio These arrangements by Joe Procopio from J.S. Bach’s Flute/Violin Sonata II in Eb are special in many ways. Firstly, it fills the need for the very best in music combining the genres of both Classical and Jazz. In addition, it is also importantly unique because it may be performed by a variety of musicians. For example, the arrangement in C may be performed by 2 or more C Instruments including Flute, Piccolo, Oboe and Violin with a small band accompaniment (Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Drums - Guitar is optional). The work may also be performed with just the Piano and/or Guitar for accompaniment. What’s more, the Rhythm Track Accompaniment is available without the solo instruments adding to the already many attributes of this music that enhance its inherent genuine global appeal. This is critical because teachers, students and musicians worldwide are constantly seeking music of the highest quality that can be skillfully presented to the public while having, at the same time, built-in qualities both pleasing to the listener and the performer alike. Bach’s melodies have certainly stood the test of time and Jazz is without question internationally popular. That makes these arrangements truly worthy of attention from people, artists and publishers throughout the world. The composer personally has had great success with this work in many major concerts including its premier performance using a Flute Choir at a Civic Center Concert held in Syracuse, NY before several thousand people who triumphed the young musicians with a standing ovation. The melody by J.S. Bach used in this work is taken from the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe Band 9 and 1 Kammermusik BWV 1031- known as the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach which was published in 46 volumes from 1851-1899. A single volume was issued in 1926. The last surviving editor of the series died in 1928, and these volumes are now public domain worldwide. They are also held in acclaim because there are no articulation or expression marks in the Gesellshaft. Therefore, the articulation and expression marks written in these arrangements by the arranger are suggestions only. Musicians may perform the works in any manner best suited to the betterment of their own performance.

Que Garota Linda is a high energy, very exciting, Brazilian-Latin style instrumental from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and flute interact, with the flute (performed by guest flutist Justo Almario) and piano trading sections of the main melody, and then providing dynamic background hooks and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, jazz improvisation, and high energy rhythm section playing. The API track featured Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums, with guest percussionist Alex Acuña of Weather Report, backing Mark Massey and Justo Almario. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators.

Suitable for programming by both student and professional ensembles.RACONTEUR (The Storyteller) is a modern jazz-rock ballad composition written and arranged for a modified large jazz ensemble instrumentation. Parts for C Flute and Tuba are scored to add those unique timbres to the ensemble sound.Rather than feature a single instrument, the melody is purposely distributed throughout the ensemble. However, the musical focal point of the piece is intended to be the featured improvisation solo space provided for Bb Tenor Saxophone 1. Since each improvisation is original and unique, the music should retain a newness with each performance. A theory sheet is also provided for less experienced improvisers to enhance soloist creativity within the intended harmonic context.Scored for groups performing at the medium level (grade 2.5 - 3.0), the unique chord progression provides the soloist with myriad possibilities from which to construct improvisational melodies. Improvisation is a key element of jazz music. Thus, this improvised solo will also inherently impact the level and quality of the entire sound of each ensemble performance.Brass ranges are purposely kept very reasonable. Piano part includes through-composed material along with written chord voicings. Bass & Drum Set Guide share the same part in an effort to encourage the two players to interact rhythmically to enhance the jazz-rock groove feel of the piece. Over the course of a forty plus year career, Mr. Burnett has performed professionally around the world, recorded noteworthy albums as a leader, taught at the college-level and co-founded a significant independent recording label, Artists Recording Collective.
