Jimmie Davis acquired the rights to the song, so he is still listed as the lyricist and Charles Mitchell as the composer.The success of the song took some time to come; Ray Charles achieved its best placement in 1962 with seventh place in the US pop charts. Other prominent performers are Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Mitch Ryder, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. Also in the TV series Star Trek Voyager and in films such as O Brother, Where Art Thou? or Annabelle 2 the song can be heard.The song was arranged for the Ukulele and notated in classical musical notation and tablature.The sound of a Vibraphone was used in the setting, so the sound does not mix with the sound of your own instrument. The melody along with the chords give you all the information you need in its minimal form to create a performance. To make this piece more accessible I have arranged it in the key of G Major which is a third below the recorded version which is in B Major. This makes the higher notes more attainable to sing for a more people and makes it easier to play for most. Who likes playing with 5 sharps?! Structure With the repeats and D.S. markings this Lead Sheet will follow the form as heard on the recording. Melody As with all my arrangements, to try and minimise the number of pages needed, the small note heads in brackets indicate where the melody is different when repeated and these notes should be played/sung on the appropriate verse. The melismatic phrase on boat at the end of bar 37 is a simplification of what is sung on the recording and the performer is free to amend as it suits them. Alternatives. I have different versions of this piece which may suit different performers/instrumentalists more. All my versions are: Voice Piano and Guitar - Melody on its own stave with guitar chords above it and a piano accompaniment underneath; Voice Piano and Guitar - As above but the melody is combined with the right hand of the piano part; Guitar Lead Sheet - Melody with guitar chords; Ukulele Lead Sheet - Melody with Ukulele chords.
