Moreover, a generous introduction provides a brief history of the Renaissance guitar, tips on period ornamentation and musicianship, recommended recordings, and invaluable resources for further research of your own.Throughout Europe, the Renaissance guitar was a popular instrument in the middle of the sixteenth century. Its composers left us a treasure-trove of music, from rustic dances to chansons and elaborate fantasias. Five-hundred years later, this music fits beautifully on the Renaissance guitar’s musical descendant, the ukulele.The Renaissance guitar and the ukulele share an almost identical tuning. As the transcriptions in this book are written in standard notation and tablature, any type of ukulele, from soprano to baritone—as well as the top four strings of the guitar— can be used to play them. Most of the pieces are in standard gCEA or GCEA tuning; the seven pieces in the second section of the book, however, require low-G tuning to render the counterpoint as written. It’s also possible for guitar and baritone uke players to read the tablature provided. The music will sound a perfect 4th lower than the notation, but as there was no standard pitch in the time of the Renaissance guitar, modern players should feel no obligation to play this music at fixed pitch. If you wish to read from the tablature and sound in the same key as the notation for ensemble purposes, guitar and baritone uke players merely need to place a capo at the fifth fret. With a certain sense of historical irony, the music of the Renaissance guitar is here reborn on modern fretted instruments.

This version of Coventry Carol is a lovely 16th century English carol in D minor, with introduction and ending arranged with an authentic early flavor. The arrangement by Anne C. Lyman, B.Mus. is designed to be performed in 3 voices, or (if the chords are also used), then 4 voices on the ukulele. The tuning is in C, or (GCEA), plus Baritone Ukulele. The arrangement works equally well for high or low G strings. Good for recitals! This arrangement is especially playable, but listeners will still be impressed. I have included both a Tab/Notation version of the conductor’s score, (5 pages), with parts for melody, harmony and baritone ukulele. A melody, notation only version is also included for your convenience. Chords have been added to the first verse, to make it more robust. They should be played on beat one only, rather than on every beat. Saunders Music #934334. Published by Saunders Music (A0.1349574). Transcription of all six of J.S. Bach's cello suites BWV 1007-1012 for ukulele (gCEA tuning) from the urtext. All pitches are maintained from the original but there are some octave transposition, changes to the contour of the line (such as with the shape of arpeggios) or revoicing chords to fit the ukulele's smaller range. The transcriptions avoid a lot of campanella playing to maintain a clearer sense of line, especially in the runs. Open strings are mostly used to facilitate position changes, and as pedals. Some of the chords use higher pitches on the fourth string to complete the harmony where necessary. Where this happens, the melodic line is normally on the first or second string to give it extra weight or emphasis if the chord is rolled. Suite No.4 has been transposed from E flat major to G major and No.6 from D major to G major, in both cases to avoid some of the problems with register, and to enable greater use of open string pedals. The other suites are in their original keys.
