Â In the movie, it was a love duet sung very quickly between Mary Martin and Dick Powers, followed by an even lively African-American quartet trying to get the couple out of the bar and to their rooms so the place can be closed for the night. Â In the intervening time, the tune has been re-established as a lullaby at a much slower tempo, which this arrangement replicates. Â Here it is cast for a full 6-octave handbell choir, with or without voice, and has among other distinctions the unresolved closing chords. Â This is a sure hit for ringers and audiences. This is a song cycle I composed for my school’s 25th birthday in 1987. The lyrics are taken from the Birmingham Evening Mail in January 1987. Since I am a sceptic of horoscopes I judged that one date is as good as the next. There are 12 songs - one for each month. They were performed with piano accompaniment and there are additional parts for: clapping, tambourine and glockenspiel (which could be replaced by any melody instrument) You could of course change the ‘Monday’ to suit your purpose

This song was commissioned to celebrate 162 years of ministry of Our Savior's Lutheran Church (OSLC) in Milwaukee, WI. The final service will is/was on Sunday, July 26, 2020. Although the physical doors will close, the community will continue as will the many ministries begotten here such as The Next Door Foundation, and others. OSLC was my home church for many years, and I was one of the ministers of music there for some time. I played for funerals, baptisms and weddings there. I raised my children there. It was a place where memories of pain and joy embrace. I hope that this song recognizes the pain of the closing, but celebrates the years of vibrant ministry, and leaves us with a sense of hope. God does not dwell in temples but in hearts filled with Agape love. The song can also be used during the pandemic as we strive to be a church in spirit without walls. Text is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I LXXXIII lines 3362-3364:  “Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.†The soundtrack of night sounds changing to dawn reflects the message of hope in Julian’s text. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble. Mary and Joseph lose track of twelve-year-old Jesus for three days, and when they finally find him, he is sitting in his Father's house--demonstrating with his questions a great understanding of God. Within the musical is a reassuringly human message: even parents chosen by God can lose a child; even a perfect child can give his parents anxiety. The message is sure to comfort anyone who has ever been a parent, a child, or even those who have misplaced Jesus for a while. The musical can be produced with a minimum of costumes, props, and scenery. At under 25 minutes, it is short enough to fit into a worship service but is solid enough to stand alone. Stage directions, production notes, and simple prop, costume, and scenery ideas are included, but feel free to adapt any of the suggestions to your situation.
