Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1088788). This piece is an original arrangement based on the wistful English folk melody 'Barbara Allen'. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. The vocal line, for any solo voice or for unison voices, retains the folk tune contour throughout, within the range of low D to high D. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The 2-part SA and 4-part SATB versions of this piece, as well as the solo piano version (Variations on 'Barbara Allen') by the same composer are also available via Sheet Music Plus. The lyrics were written by Rinkart in 1636, the melody by Cruger in 1647, and the popular harmony by Mendlessohn in 1840.This arrangement begins with a Handelian keyboard introduction, modulates to the 1st Verse for Unison choir with a new homophonic reharmonization for accompaniment, then modulates to Verse 2 which is a softer Unison with a drone accompaniment and a voice solo antiphon, then a final modulation into Verse 3 which is Unison with optional traditional SATB hymn parts.Since it is in Choral Unison we have used it here in the National Cathedral for gathered massed choirs from around the country to celebrate the official Government Holiday of National Day of Thanksgiving. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1353797). This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Â I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody. Â The accompaniment has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line. Â I have altered the melody and moved much of it to the off beats. Â As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato. Â I have chosen 4 of the many historic verses that are more inclusive and general. Â This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire. Â (I have also published several versions on this site for flute or clarinet solo using various instrumental accompaniments as a duet.)
