The mass was written as memorial for the composer's cousin, Farley McDaniel. The majority of this a capella mass was lost in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Originally written for SATB solo voices it could be performed by SATB choral group. The Lux Aeternam is for tenor voice only although it could fit an alto voice.

Total Eclipse is an Art Song.  I have used several lines of poetry from Newburgh Hamilton (1741) and set them to unique music that is a fusion of Classical, Romantic, and Modern.  The music expressively drifts from major to minor to modal every few measures, inspired by the themes of darkness and light.  This approachable piece of music is a good introduction for singers to the interpretation of an Art Song and is a dramatic performance piece for recital or concert.  It could even be used as a sing-along for the celebration of an actual eclipse! (Haydn also used variations of this text to create several Recitatives and an Aria for his oratorio Samson.)  2 pages, 1:50 minutesVocal Range - 1 octave, middle C to Calso an SATB choral version on this site; also as a vocal solo in several keystemporary recording using a soloist.

This arrangement modifies this public domain piece with instrumentation and genre. It has been arranged as a hip-hop rap solo with clean slightly modified original lyrics to give an authentic hip-hop urban feel. This is an easy and should provide some refreshing fun for intermediate students. The instrumentation is purely percussion. If a teachers has a particularly cool musical student with some swag and performance quality, this would be an excellent feature. But choral groups of all sizes and levels can enjoy this pieced. The percussion includes conga drums, tom-toms, sleigh bells, and studio drum set or comparable. Beatboxing the percussion would add a nice challenge and flavor for your choral groups. The lyrics were written by Rinkart in 1636, the melody by Cruger in 1647, and the popular harmony by Mendlessohn in 1840.This arrangement begins with a Handelian keyboard introduction, modulates to the 1st Verse for Unison choir with a new homophonic reharmonization for accompaniment, then modulates to Verse 2 which is a softer Unison with a drone accompaniment and a voice solo antiphon, then a final modulation into Verse 3 which is Unison with optional traditional SATB hymn parts.Since it is in Choral Unison we have used it here in the National Cathedral for gathered massed choirs from around the country to celebrate the official Government Holiday of National Day of Thanksgiving. I am aware that one country has also used this piece as part of the Investiture Ceremony to install their new Bishop. The addition of the Psalm antiphons gives it a Nationalistic angle as well. This is an original setting of a text commonly associated with a movement from Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, for use in worship or concerts at Christmas. It is an accessible 4-verse carol which uses modality and a lilting compound metre to convey rocking movement, within a folk style. Interest is provided by a contrasting duple feel on the last line, and a harmonic twist (picardy third) at the end of the verse (appropriately on the word 'surprise'). The piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice.
