It is mostly unison with some divided parts towards the end, and is versatile in that it would work equally well for school or church Christmas programs or concerts. The melody is catchy and easy to learn and the accompaniment is straightforward and supports the singers well. This is a rhythmic but lyrical Christmas anthem that young singers will enjoy. Above all, it expresses the profound joy and anticipation children of all ages experience in welcoming the Christ Child! Nancy DeVries is an American-born composer, organist and choir director living in Ontario, Canada, whose published and commissioned works have been performed in the United States and Canada.

This is evident starting in the two introductory measures, which grow from a single note and immediately introduce the tune. The introductory harmonic language is reused throughout the first verse, which closes with a solo flute soaring above the final note. The solo flute continues its melody in tandem with the tune in the second verse. The third verse features a tenor melody on an English tuba stop while the upper accompanimental voices explore their own melody. After a brief transition to full organ, the final verse features the upper voices in a soaring descant, capitulating on an ascending scale to a high F. The text foreshadows the message of the advent season (Lord, quickly come… with all thine angels) while the harmonic and musical drama with the descant paint the text and foreshadow the musical jubilation of Christmas. As an anthem, this setting is quick for a choir of any size to learn, while as a concertato it allows the music director, organist, or even pianist the flexibility to greatly enhance congregational song.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1353797). This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Â I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody. Â The accompaniment has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line. Â I have altered the melody and moved much of it to the off beats. Â As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato. Â I have chosen 4 of the many historic verses that are more inclusive and general. Â This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire. Â (I have also published several versions on this site for flute or clarinet solo using various instrumental accompaniments as a duet.) Â (Also as a piano solo.)range - melody - 10th, low B to D3 pages score; Â 3:17 minutes.
