Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998831). This is a lively, singable and catchy setting of the traditional words used at Choral Evensong. The piece features much syncopation in the jazz-like Magnificat, with its repetitive, minimalist accompaniment figures. Meanwhile, the hypnotic Nunc Dimittis repeats its key phrase several times, with increasing dynamics. Both movements end in the customary manner with the Gloria, which is based on the Magnificat's opening. The text is in English, adapted from Luke 1: 46-55 and Luke 2: 29-32. This work is appropriate for most standards of soloist or unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment is for organ but can be adapted by a good pianist. The SATB version of the work is also available via Sheet Music Plus. The Gloria alone, in various versions, is available via SMP as 'Gloria Patri'.

This is a great song for kids that love superheroes. It is a good educational piece because it includes a fairly simple vocal melody in a conservative range and also includes an easy to play part for Orff xylophones (in the key of C). This marvelous 1941 song was originally recorded as a big band/swing tune by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra and featured in the 1941 movie Sun ValleySerenade. Â It was the first song to receive a gold record, presented by RCA Victor in 1942, for sales of 1.2 million copies. Â The song was an extended production number, and became the No. 1 song across the United States on December 7, 1941, and remained at No. 1 for nine weeks on the Billboard Best Sellers chart. Â It opens up with the band, sounding like a train rolling out of the station, complete with the trumpets and trombones imitating a train whistle, before the instrumental portion comes in playing two parts of the main melody. Â This is followed by the vocal introduction of four lines before the main part of the song is heard. Â The main song opens with a dialog between a passenger and a shoeshine boy. Â The singer describes the train's route, originating from Pennsylvania Station in New York and running through Baltimore to North Carolina before reaching Chattanooga. He mentions a woman he knew from an earlier time in his life, who will be waiting for him at the station and with whom he plans to settle down for good. After the entire song is sung, the band plays two parts of the main melody as an instrumental, with the instruments imitating the WHOO WHOO of the train as the song ends. When I first observed that, I asked one who was standing why he did that and he said it came from the Book of Nehemiah. After further research, I composed this baritone solo to preach out a lesson. I asked another member of the church if she knew anything of this practice, and she told me some do it but others do not want visitors to stand out. With an Old Time hymn sing accompaniment, this makes for good summer fill in music while the choir is on vacation.
