Published by Digital Print Publishing (A0.969530). The Canon Yeoman's Lament is a song from the perspective of one of Geoffrey Chaucer's characters from the Canterbury Tales--the Canon Yeoman. In Chaucer's famous work, this unfortunate dupe recounted his misfortunes at the hands of the Canon, a.k.a, Alchemist, as well as the plight of one of the Alchemist's many swindled customers. The song is written for unison choir with a piano accompaniment. It also includes a short play at the end that dramatizes Chaucer's rendition of the Canon Yeoman's Tale. The play requires a minimum of six players and would be excellent as a skit for secondary students. The Canon Yeoman's Lament could conclude the play or, if given a brief verbal introduction, it could stand on its own as a humorous interjection highlighting the perils from swindlers, both past and present. This tongue-in-cheek song captures Chaucer's legendary humor for modern audiences!

The lyrics were written by Rinkart in 1636, the melody by Cruger in 1647, and the popular harmony by Mendlessohn in 1840.This arrangement begins with a Handelian keyboard introduction, modulates to the 1st Verse for Unison choir with a new homophonic reharmonization for accompaniment, then modulates to Verse 2 which is a softer Unison with a drone accompaniment and a voice solo antiphon, then a final modulation into Verse 3 which is Unison with optional traditional SATB hymn parts.Since it is in Choral Unison we have used it here in the National Cathedral for gathered massed choirs from around the country to celebrate the official Government Holiday of National Day of Thanksgiving. I am aware that one country has also used this piece as part of the Investiture Ceremony to install their new Bishop. The addition of the Psalm antiphons gives it a Nationalistic angle as well. This marvelous 1941 song was originally recorded as a big band/swing tune by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra and featured in the 1941 movie Sun ValleySerenade. Â It was the first song to receive a gold record, presented by RCA Victor in 1942, for sales of 1.2 million copies. Â The song was an extended production number, and became the No. 1 song across the United States on December 7, 1941, and remained at No. 1 for nine weeks on the Billboard Best Sellers chart. Â It opens up with the band, sounding like a train rolling out of the station, complete with the trumpets and trombones imitating a train whistle, before the instrumental portion comes in playing two parts of the main melody. Â This is followed by the vocal introduction of four lines before the main part of the song is heard. Â The main song opens with a dialog between a passenger and a shoeshine boy. Â The singer describes the train's route, originating from Pennsylvania Station in New York and running through Baltimore to North Carolina before reaching Chattanooga. He mentions a woman he knew from an earlier time in his life, who will be waiting for him at the station and with whom he plans to settle down for good. After the entire song is sung, the band plays two parts of the main melody as an instrumental, with the instruments imitating the WHOO WHOO of the train as the song ends. Â This is a very intriguing adaptation, with or without voice. Â The price indicated allows you to purchase one (1) copy of the vocal version.

Text is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I LXXXIII lines 3362-3364:  “Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.†The soundtrack of night sounds changing to dawn reflects the message of hope in Julian’s text. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble. Total Eclipse is an Art Song.  I have used several lines of poetry from Newburgh Hamilton (1741) and set them to unique music that is a fusion of Classical, Romantic, and Modern.  The music expressively drifts from major to minor to modal every few measures, inspired by the themes of darkness and light.  This approachable piece of music is a good introduction for singers to the interpretation of an Art Song and is a dramatic performance piece for recital or concert.  It could even be used as a sing-along for the celebration of an actual eclipse! (Haydn also used variations of this text to create several Recitatives and an Aria for his oratorio Samson.)  2 pages, 1:50 minutesVocal Range - 1 octave, middle C to Calso an SATB choral version on this site; also as a vocal solo in several keystemporary recording using a soloist.

It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. The vocal line, for any solo voice or for unison voices, retains the folk tune contour throughout, within the range of low D to high D. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player.
