Here, the famous Waltz is arranged for Violin Duet, directly from the orchestral score. The first performance of the ballet was in St Petersburg in 1890. Like his other ballets, Sleeping Beauty was slow to gain popularity with the public and international recognition only came after Tchaikovsky’s death. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and both parts explore a wide range of the instrument. The overall performance time is around five minutes. I wanted this piece to convey the feeling of the shared warmth of having family and friends meeting over the festive season when everything is done, and now it’s time to enjoy! Written in Concert C major the introduction begins with a bell- like Christmas chime settling into the main theme which is almost like a verse and chorus.The piece has two of these sections with a link between the two. The second section is a different treatment to the first as some of the bell like figurations of the opening are incorporated. There is also a mix of staccato and legato phrasing to give contrast. The Chorus part is repeated before a short quiet reflective ending. The range is two octaves at most and there is nothing more complicated than an eighth note- hence it has been set in early intermediate level.I wanted 2 equal instrumental parts so there is no number 1 and 2! The whole piece is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.Ideal to be added to a Christmas concert list!It is 3 minutes 15 in length. Price is for score and parts.

Led by not just one violin but two, the roles of leading voice and accompaniment constantly switch between the three instruments.All three movements feature two strongly contrasting themes and each of the three approaches the themes' development in a unique way.The first movement's tension resolves in a kind of anti-climax, a moment of greatest fragility after the built-up tension, which then returns to a (almost) note-perfect reprise of the exposition, to show that in the end nothing has changed.The second movement even intensifies the struggle between the two themes, with ultimately one of them taking over.In the third movement, an energetic waltz, no effort is even made to unify it's two themes, they just stand block-like against each other.

A Piano Accompaniment track is available.Valse Sentimentale is in ternary form, in 3/4 time and romantic in natureThe first section is a gentle waltz in G minor minor and the second section by contrast is in E flat major and takes on a barcarolle like quality but remaining in 3/4 not the traditional 6/8. It returns to section one again and the coda brings back a short reminder of the barcarolle theme in G major to finish.The range of the violins are around two octaves with the top note- top E flat appearing once. Bowing is excluded and left to the performer.Each part is equally divided to avoid the 1st violin and 2nd definition. I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess.
