LOCAL HERO - WILD THEME - FLUTE and GUITAR DUETSuits Classical, Acoustic or Electric GuitarDerek Hasted writes Rightly described as an astonishingly beautiful piece, this music from the film Local Hero actually features twice on the soundtrack album, in different keys with different solo instruments.My arrangement for flute and classical guitar exploits the sustain of the flute and the soft tones of  nylon strings and works well at a slightly more modest pace compared to the original. I’ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. My arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopfler’s quasi-improvised variations on the tune. There are no dynamics, but the changing texture of the accompaniment creates the illusion of dynamic changes and you are welcome to add phrasing and dynamics to make the performance “yoursâ€.The guitar part is a little challenging at speed but this will suit confident intermediate players.This enjoyable concert item has a wonderfully captivating melody that the audience will be humming all the way home...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. It will suit an intermediate duo. I’ve made a significant change to the key here, but that allows the guitar to produce a haunting first verse where a stopped B and an open B ring through each other to generate a smoothness of accompaniment that is sublime and mimics the reverberant piano of the original.The arpeggio patterns here match closely those of the original piano too, giving verses 1 and 2 quite different texture. Sadly there is no orchestra and massed choir to build this version in the way that the original does, but the dynamics on the score tie in with the original song.The guitar part is here in “score and tab†and in “score alone†- there is no difference in the music, but the tab may help notation readers see how the opening section sits on the neck of the guitar.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

WHEN YOU SAY NOTHING AT ALL - FLUTE and GUITARFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This lovely melody, first made famous by Alison Krauss, and more recently by Ronan Keating, makes a delightful concert piece for flute and guitar.My arrangement is based on Ronan Keating’s version, where the guitar part is a little different to the original. The music doesn’t have the slow fade-out of Keating’s piece - it’s not that easy for a flute and guitar duo on stage to emulate that! But it does have all the rest of the thematic material, including the strange but seldom noticed fact that verse two is one measure shorter than verse one. The key is the same as Keating’s version and includes the rather lovely key changes - both seem to go up slightly in pitch, yet the second key change actually returns back to the starting key.Much of the guitar part can be played in the lower positions where there’s just a little bit more sustain to help support the flute part. Where the guitar part needs sustain across the bar-lines, I have used “ties to nothing†rather than formal ties. Ties generate a lot more black on the page and make the music harder to read. I hope you enjoy performing this!

Both will be familiar to many guitarists as they have featured over the years in a number of Graded Examinations.The Flute countermelody is a new addition, which I wrote so that the piece slotted seamlessly into the background music I played with my flute partner at a friend’s wedding.The Tanz is often mistakenly translated as Dance of the Washerwoman, and it’s also known as Wascha Mesa. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.The flute part is in the lower register in Tanz, and in the upper register in Hupfauf to add contrast to the pieces. Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and, for the guitar, possibly some tone color changes, as the phrases repeat.
