English • German.The same procedure was followed by Berthold Tours, who worked melodies from the fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck into a colourful Fantasy featuring tunes such as “Ein Männlein steht im Walde†(‘A man stands in the forest’) or the “Knusperwalzer†(‘Gingerbread Waltz’). Tours was a Dutch-English violinist, composer and editor who studied at conservatoires in Brussels and Leipzig. After spending some time in Russia, he moved to London in 1861 and remained here for the rest of his life. In London he worked as a violinist, violin teacher, organist and composer – and latterly also in a music publishing house. His work as a composer is broad in scope. This Humperdinck Fantasy is an imaginative example of the virtually endless supply of variations composed on popular operatic melodies in the 19th Century. Plate no. 25821, published in 189.

This is a reworked setting of a movement from his stage work ‘Dmitry the Pretender and Vasily Shuysky’, the ‘Introduction and Mazurka from the dramatic historical chronicle by Aleksandr N. Ostrovsky’ (dating from 1866/67), which the composer transcribed for piano in June 1867. John W. Slatter, who arranged other pieces for Schott publishers, set this pretty Mazurka for violin and piano – a graceful little dance movement suitable for playing as an encore or for music-making at home. Born in 1873, Ethel Barns studied at the Watford School of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London before becoming famous as a violinist-composer. During her career Barns composed over 120 works comprising orchestral, chamber and vocal music; to date her music has been performed at the Proms twenty times and a large number of her works were published by houses such as Schott, Elkin and Carl Fischer. Although at the time several women had become famous as performers, it was rare for them to be recognised as composers. Barns died in 1948 and was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London. Valse - Caprice is a 5 minute, advance standard work for violin and piano which would be an ideal recital work or encore for high level student and professional performers. It was first published by Robert Cocks & Co. in 1894 and later published by Schott.

Liebesleid for Solo Violin and Pianoforte.Kreisler wrote a number of pieces for the violin, including solos for encores, such as Liebesleid and Liebesfreud. Some of Kreisler's compositions were pastiches ostensibly in the style of other composers. They were originally ascribed to earlier composers, such as Gaetano Pugnani, Giuseppe Tartini and Antonio Vivaldi, and then, in 1935, Kreisler revealed that it was he who wrote the pieces. When critics complained, Kreisler replied that they had already deemed the compositions worthy: The name changes, the value remains, he said. He also wrote operettas, including Apple Blossoms in 1919[8] and Sissy [de] in 1932, a string quartet, and cadenzas, including ones for Brahms's Violin Concerto, Paganini's D major Violin Concerto, and Beethoven's Violin Concerto. His cadenzas for the Beethoven concerto are the ones most often played by violinists today.He wrote the music for the 1936 movie The King Steps Out directed by Josef von Sternberg, based on the early years of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.Kreisler performed and recorded his own version of the first movement of Paganini's D major Violin Concerto. The movement is rescored and in some places reharmonised, and the orchestral introduction is completely rewritten in some places. The overall effect is of a late-nineteenth-century work.The mausoleum of Kreisler in Woodlawn Cemetery.Kreisler owned several antique violins made by luthiers Antonio Stradivari, Pietro Guarneri, Giuseppe Guarneri, and Carlo Bergonzi, most of which eventually came to bear his name. He also owned a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin of 1860, which he often used as his second violin, and which he often loaned to the young prodigy Josef Hassid. In 1952 he donated his Giuseppe Guarneri to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. where it remains in use for performances given in the library.On recordings, Kreisler's style resembles that of his younger contemporary Mischa Elman, with a tendency toward expansive tempi, a continuous and varied vibrato, expressive phrasing, and a melodic approach to passage-work. Kreisler makes considerable use of portamento and rubato. The two violinists' approaches are less similar in big works of the standard repertoire, such as Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, than in smaller pieces.A trip to a Kreisler concert is recounted in Siegfried Sassoon's 1928 autobiographical novel Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man.The Australian manufacturer of electronics and consumer goods Kriesler (later a subsidiary of Philips) supposedly took its name after Fritz Kreisler but had intentionally misspelled the name as to avoid possible juristical actions from other parties.

It was commissioned by the Music Department at Lehigh University and premiered by two of its faculty members, Paul Chou and Paul Salerni. The violin has always been my favorite instrument. I have written twelve string quartets. For the violinist extraordinaire Irina Muresanu I wrote a big violin concerto in 2009, and a Partita for solo violin in 2011. I am slated to write another concerto, albeit a chamber one, for the Boston Classical Orchestra and violinist Sharon Roffman for a premiere in the fall of 2013. Last year I decided to write a third duo for violin and piano. I wanted to do something substantial and grandiose, hence the title Grand Duo, opus 151. Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), undoubtedly, is one of the most important and most successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world of violin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'Scottish Fantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. Apart from works of his own, Sarasate also arranged other works for his own use, such as the two 'Nocturnes' by Frédéric Chopin. To pianists, it may seem like sacrilege to arrange such masterpieces but Sarasate wanted to subscribe some of the most beautiful and most tender melodies to the violin which he saw primarily as a vocal instrument. Or he might have regretted that Chopin had not written any original work for violin and piano – but here's Sarasate's arrangement to make up for this lack.
