Rachmaninoff: Zdes' Khorosho, Op. 21, No. 7 (as played by Yo Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott) ARRANGED for VIOLIN and Piano.___________________________________________ЗдеÑÑŒ хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of AntonÃn Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. Silent Night arranged for Violin & Piano with new harmony for the final verse. Score: 2 pg. Part: 1 pg. Silent Night Origins Father Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics for a new Christmas Carol. He wanted the new carol for his Christmas Eve Mass. With only a couple of hours until the service, He asked organist and schoolteacher Franz Gruber to write a melody and simple accompaniment to go with the lyrics. The result is probably the most famous of all Christmas carols – Silent Night. First Performance Perhaps because the organ was undergoing repairs, or to make sure the accompaniment was easy enough, Mohr asked Gruber to write it for the guitar. Mohr played the guitar, and both Mohr and Gruber gave the world premiere performance at the Christmas Eve Mass in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf in Salzburg. Original Score Eventually, the original score became lost, and consequently, Mohr's name was largely forgotten.  Though the public originally recognized Gruber as the composer, many people over time began rumors that a more famous composer was responsible. Thus, they floated the names of Haydn, Mozart, and even Beethoven. Authorities eventually settled the matter when a manuscript in Mohr’s handwriting turned up in 1820. Consequently, we learn that Mohr wrote the lyrics in 1816, and Gruber composed the melody in 1818. Popularity Nonetheless, Silent Night is still very popular. Singers have performed this song in nearly every genre and in multiple languages. Perhaps the most famous version is the one Bing Crosby crafted. This version is the third best-selling physical single recording in the history of recorded music. This particular recording was released in 1935 and sold at least 30 million copies. Only two songs have ever sold more. Elton John released Candle in the Wind in 1997 and sold 33 million copies. The record for most copies ever sold goes to Bing Crosby. He released White Christmas in 1942 and sold 50 million physical copies.

Published by PRB Music (A0.1382422). After being locked down by Covid, I had almost lost the will to live, let alone go on holiday again outside the UK. Two years before I had had a lovely time in Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Puccini's House, Florence, Sienna, and more. Almost at the end of the trip I stayed a couple of days with my dear musical friends in Perugia, where their then 8-year-old daughter, Martha, was making great strides forward on the violin (mum is a concert pianist and teacher, similarly dad, but on the clarinet. I had booked to stay in Cesena where they had moved two, and I had a lovely time here, two, adding Bologna, Rossini's Museum, Rimini and some of the Adriatic coast to my list of places visited. They, too, had had lockdowns, and cancellations, but quite by chance, the weekend I had planned to be in Cesena, was the rearranged date of a special outside concert in the imposing surroundings of Rocca Malatestiana, a medieval fortress than dominates the town. Martha was going to be performing a violin concerto by Rode, and her dad had adapted the orchestral accompaniment, so that the large clarinet ensemble could take its place on the night. It was a wonderful, moving evening, and Martha played so well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house! When I knew I was visiting them this year, I wrote Martha a little fun piece, with piano accompaniment, that she might have been able to play while I was there. But because of the rescheduled concerto performance, there just wasn't enough time for her to learn and practise the piece with her violin teacher in Bologna. I even added an optional part for clarinet, so dad would not feel left out. Hopefully, one day, I might still hear Waltz for Martha played by its dedicatees! It's a kind of schmalzy Viennese Waltz, in the style of Kreisler and others! You can purchase the piano score and violin part here. The andante has two repetitive parts in a good way; the second part is longer and going to a broad conclusion. Each part begins quite melodiously from forte to soft piano and continues with broad gestures rhythmically. The music has a lot of broad developments; the music remains harmonious and soft. The loudness often goes from soft to a moderately loud music. Although the beginning of the first part starts with a moderately loud music, at the end it a couple of times suddenly changes from soft piano to a moderately loud music. In contrast, the second part begins with a moderately loud music and immediately changes to soft piano; the same happens in the middle of the second part after which there begins a very good preparation for the concluding notes which are broad. Moreover, although having more soft music, the second part of the andante has also a moderately loud music which prepares for broad concluding notes. Their purpose was wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that I compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan know they would not be forgotten.I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting that I went home and composed a new piece of music entitled: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. After a favorable response from the group, I began composing another piece for violin and piano entitled: THE FINAL WAVE. In this piece, I tried to paint the horror, destruction, uncertainty and sadness of the disaster while giving hope for a future for the people who witnessed this catastrophic event. Unfortunately, THE FINAL WAVE was never completed as planned back in 2011. However, eleven years later, I completed this memorable piano and violin duet. Even though it’s been many years since that terrible day of March 11, 2011, the music can still convey emotions of melancholy, discord, resilience and compassion for tragic and unforeseeable events of today. This timeless work is dedicated to remember and give hope to all those affected by disasters and catastrophic tragedies. This advanced level of music is clearly notated for piano and violin and can be an extraordinary supplemental selection for recitals and concerts. The Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) had a penchant for fairy tales and devoted himself to such stories at an early age: to the character of the seafarer and gusli player Sadko in an orchestral work, or to legendary Arabian figures in Antar, later especially in his symphonic suite Sheherazade of course. The subject of the wandering minstrel Sadko who would rather be a rich merchant was taken up again in the opera of the same title: Before going off to distant places, he asks three foreign merchants – a Varangian, a Venetian and an Indian – to tell him about their home countries. His famous Hindu song with an exotic touch was arranged by Fritz Kreisler for violin and piano – the present edition contains this charming piece in a version for string trio.
