English • German.Hungarian composer and violinist Jenö Hubay, born Eugen Huber, received his musical training in Budapest and made his concert début with Viotti’s Violin Concerto No. 22 in A minor. He spent three years in Berlin, where he studied violin with Joseph Joachim. After his return he met Franz Liszt, who recommended that he travel to Paris. In that city he was a welcome guest at musical salons; he also formed a friendship with Henri Vieuxtemps. Hubay taught groups of violin students first in Brussels, then for a long time in Budapest. For twenty-five years he toured Europe as a virtuoso violinist, settling in Switzerland for a while before returning to Budapest for the rest of his life. His chamber compositions include a series of little pieces very probably written for his own use at musical salons, along with character pieces reminiscent of his Hungarian homeland and exotic pieces such as Plaintes arabes (Arabian Lament), an expressive and mournful lament on the violin. He gave a present to me and my little Marie of a delightful lullaby composed that Christmas afternoon, Clara Schumann noted in the family diary they shared. This Slumer Song of 1841 Robert Schumann later included as No. 16 in his collection of Albumblätter (Album Leaves) Op. 124. The collection of twenty miniatures for piano was written over a fairly long period of time: the first piedes were written in 1832/33 and the composer started work on the last piece, the Canon, in 1845. In 1853 Schumann had the idea of brining together barious individual pieces that didn't fit in anywhere else in a collection of Albumblätter that was published in December of the same year. It is a bright bouquet of poetic little piano pieces of moderate technical difficulty: there can be no comparsion with grand works such as his G minor piano sonata of Carnaval. These musical aphorisms were not intended for the concert hall, though, but for domestic music making: this is chamber music in the true sense of the term. After unpleasant wrangling that even involved going to court to obtain permission to marry Clara Wieck, there followed a time of intense productivity for Robert Schumann: 1840 was his year of songs and 1841 his year of symphonies. Their marriage, which eventually took place against the wishes of Schumann's father-in-law, and the birth of their first child on 1 September 1841 contributed much to his personal happiness. It was for Marie that the hyppy father now composed this Slumber Song, which has enjoyed great popularity ever since: a simple and tender lullaby, written by the father as a surprise ´gift. This lullgy lends itself very well to being performed on a melodic instrument with piano accompaniment, as in thes edition for violin.

Little is known about this violin and viola player from the French city of Lille who also worked in Paris from 1844-1852 as an orchestral violinist at the Opéra comique. His name was listed in 1841 as a member of a string quartet. As in the case with Alard, surviving compositions by Faucheux include arrangements of operatic melodies popular at that time and entertaining pieces for musical salon evenings. Of those pieces published by Schott we have chosen this lively Sérénade, which flashes nimbly by in the style of a Tarantella. Plate no. 21966, published in 1875.

Francis Ball was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and currently lives and performs in Las Vegas. His Words This collaboration began with a powerful name. I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story. The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895. Time is a flat circle. This is how art moves and breathes, and I’m truly honored to take part. MMY.
