He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined. Â

Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. It consists of 14 different pieces. It offers many tools for the initial development of both the right and the left-hand techniques. All melodic pieces help develop the softness of sound and stimulate smooth change of position. Based on the different methodological tasks, they are divided as follows: No. 1 - 3 – Mastering the legato and detaché techniques (rhythmic bowing) and getting to know holds and pauses; No. 4 - 5 – Connecting strings: this essential part of the technique requires the development of right- hand flexibility. Tackling position changing is also part of this section. Most of your time will be spent on the middle pair of strings. You might take a look at this same arrangement of mine in D Major; the more familiar key may help you through the trickier passages.This would be a phenomenal closer for recitals or concerts. A great show-piece for social and civic events, its inspiring message would even serve in church-related functions. The andante has two repetitive parts in a good way; the second part is longer and going to a broad conclusion. Each part begins quite melodiously from forte to soft piano and continues with broad gestures rhythmically. The music has a lot of broad developments; the music remains harmonious and soft. The loudness often goes from soft to a moderately loud music. Although the beginning of the first part starts with a moderately loud music, at the end it a couple of times suddenly changes from soft piano to a moderately loud music. In contrast, the second part begins with a moderately loud music and immediately changes to soft piano; the same happens in the middle of the second part after which there begins a very good preparation for the concluding notes which are broad. Moreover, although having more soft music, the second part of the andante has also a moderately loud music which prepares for broad concluding notes. The spear is said to have extraordinary powers. He who possesses it will rule the world and he who loses it thereafter will die an untimely death. The last person recorded to have had it was Adolf Hitler. This musical composition journeys through the time of Hitler and his obsession to obtain the spear, his atrocious acts during his tenure of the spear, and the loss of the spear. The spears main thematic motions are the glissandos in the violin that represent the spears anger and tortuous ways. I. Spear Found takes place during his times as an understudy of Dietrich Eckart, a dedicated satanist and figure in the Occult Thule Society and founding member of the Nazi party. Dietrich said: Follow Hitler! He will dance, but it is I who have called the tune! I have initiated him into the Secret Doctrine' opened his centres in vision and given him the means to communicate with the Powers. Do not morn for me; I shall have influenced history more than any other German. Hitler became enamored with the Spear of Destiny, which claimed it called to him. Spear Found, is Hitler's journey to capturing the spear to rule the world. II. Spear Possessed begins with no time meter or key signature. It is ad liberty of the performers and is a musical representation of the spears possessive powers towards evil. This movement takes place during the time of the Holocaust and the actions committed during Hitler's reign of world domination. The movement infers a jewish folk song titled, Dayeinu, a jewish Passover song meaning it would have been enough. This song is set in context of freedom. The movement goes through variations of Dayeinu and the spears version of a possessed Dayeinu. The violin has fast and rapid rhythms with small thematic material of the folk tune. At the end of the movement, the piano strikes the low end of the piano with a soft yarn mallet to symbolize the bombs dropping and the start of World War II. III. Spear Lost takes place during WWII and the Marines efforts to take down Hitler's reign. During the 3rd movement, the Marine Corps music comes to life as they take control of the spear and ultimately end the war. The Spear however, takes its last stand as the spears motif soars over the possessed marine tune. At the end of the movement, the spear is once again screeching as it survives and goes missing once again.

Vintage pop romance! This accompanied instrumental solo is a Theme and Variations. For the Theme I used an extract from the 1906 hit pop song I Love You Truly by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, a celebrated female composer at the turn of century. With each variation the melody and rhythm evolve further from the original Theme. The tempo also increases slightly as you progress to each new variation. The first variation adds chromatic embellishment, the second variation syncopates the rhythm, and the third variation uses triplet patterns. More life is added to your romance with each variation!Each person who has heard this piece hears something different, but in all of them it conjures up vintage courting; and most say it would fit a soundtrack to an early silent movie. So, at heart, this piece is still a turn of the century love ballad, but livened up and fused with subtle influences from other styles and periods. Perfect for weddings where you are trying to please everyone; a bit pop, a bit classical, and totally romantic!Works equally well in a classroom or lesson studying Theme and Variations. The easy-going melody only has a range of just over an octave. Its beauty and technique suits it for any recital as well.6 minutes with repeats, 3 minutes without; 6 page score; 3 page solo partRecording is of the Cello/Piano version and doesn't take the repeats.
