A dreamy waltz that provides a calm contrast to the storming turmoil of the sonata's other movements, culminating in its own, almost exaggerated, climax before returning to the initial tranquility. Ulrich Lehensteiner's Violin Sonata in c is a very dark and tumultuous piece of chamber music, with only a few bright moments. The ominously drifting mood of the first movement is only briefly interrupted by the dreamy waltz of the second movement, followed up with an absolute forced march a finale that blasts through from start to finish with the highest energy possible. The virtuosity of the sonata lies not so much in the technically difficult figures, but in maintaining that high level of energy demanded by incessant rhythms and constant fortes throughout the entire piece that is 20 minutes of music.PDF includes piano score violin part.

Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris.After the death of her mother,Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarriedwith an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studiesprivately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, MichelCarré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chieflyknown today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe. This work was written for Paul Viardot, the son of Pauline and a well-known violin virtuoso during La Belle époque.1. For the first time in 3 years, Elijah prays for rain. In the following rainstorm, Elijah outruns Ahab’s chariot returning to Samaria. But the next morning it seems as if nothing has happened. Jezebel still has her 400 prophets. She sends a message to Elijah that he will be killed.♫ Elijah is discouraged and defeated. Did Mt Carmel really mean nothing? He runs for the wilderness, complaining to God. He is so disheartened that he asks God to take his life. He makes a pilgrimage to Mt Horeb where Moses received the Law, fasting for 40 days, still complaining. He yearns for God to answer him. As at Mt Carmel, God had demonstrated His power at Sinai with thunderstorm and lightning. Elijah is evidently expecting large dramatic gestures for God to reveal Himself. But now God will teach Elijah that He also acts in ordinary, quiet ways, as will his continued ministry♫ 8 Themes were used to create this movement: 1. Ahab (based on Movement 2, theme 3) 2. English • German.Hungarian composer and violinist Jenö Hubay, born Eugen Huber, received his musical training in Budapest and made his concert début with Viotti’s Violin Concerto No. 22 in A minor. He spent three years in Berlin, where he studied violin with Joseph Joachim. After his return he met Franz Liszt, who recommended that he travel to Paris. In that city he was a welcome guest at musical salons; he also formed a friendship with Henri Vieuxtemps. Hubay taught groups of violin students first in Brussels, then for a long time in Budapest. For twenty-five years he toured Europe as a virtuoso violinist, settling in Switzerland for a while before returning to Budapest for the rest of his life. His chamber compositions include a series of little pieces very probably written for his own use at musical salons, along with character pieces reminiscent of his Hungarian homeland and exotic pieces such as Plaintes arabes (Arabian Lament), an expressive and mournful lament on the violin. Plate no. 23388, published in 1882.
