Nikolai Andreyevitch Roslawez (1880/81-1944) studied violin in his youth, taught violin later and very often even gave concerts himself. The works he left comprise numerous compositions for his favourite instrument: two violin concertos, six sonatas, cycles such as Three Dances (1923) and 24 Preludes (1941/1942) as well as many individual pieces. The two volumes published here for the first time complete the publication of his works for this instrumentation. The different and varied character pieces date from the years 1907 to 1910 and 1930 and show the development of his personal style. Whereas the early pieces are rather traditional, Roslawez' later pieces show his way toward his individual tonal system; the closeness to Skriabin's music is conspicuous. The repertoire for this style is particularly sparse, and this is why both volumes are real treasure chests of character pieces and can be recommended to every violinist.

Die zweite Violinsonate op. 58 entstand im November und Dezember 2009 und ist als freundliches Gegenstück zu der düster-aufgewühlten ersten Violinsonate op. 38 (2000) konzipiert. Die helle Grundstimmung des Werkes ist sicherlich nicht zuletzt durch seinen Enstehungsort Cervo an der ligurischen Riviera, meiner italienischen Wahlheimat, buchstäblich bei Sonnenschein unter blauem Himmel entstanden, beeinflusst. Dem ganzen Werk liegt ein musikalisches Motto zugrunde, das jedoch erst im abschließenden zehntaktigen Adagio amoroso, das aus einer versunkenen Welt zu entstammen scheint, verraten wird. Alles Material ist darauf bezogen und die ganze Sonate scheint eigentlich nur komponiert worden zu sein, um diese Schlussaussage formulieren zu können. Der erste Satz ist ein breit angelegtes Moderato mit zwei Themen in strenger Sonatenhauptsatzform. Sowohl thematisches Material als auch alle formalen Verbindungsglieder sind harmonisch wie melodisch aus den Intervallen der kleinen und großen Terz und deren Komplementärintervallen, der großen und kleinen Sext gebildet. Dieses beinahe serielle Verfahren wird allerdings von dem überschwänglich romantischen Gestus der Musik vollkommen kaschiert. Der sehr schnelle, federleicht schwebende zweite Scherzosatz wird beherrscht vom luftigen Pizzicato der Violine und flüchtigen Klavierfiguren, nur im gesanglichen Trio erhebt sich die Violine zu einer vierphrasigen, langsam aufsteigenden Kantilene auf choralartig akkordischem Untergrund des Klaviers. Die langsame Einleitung des Finalsatzes nähert sich dem abschließenden Motto bereits sehr deutlich ohne es ganz erklingen zu lassen. Diese Introduktion wird in die Mitte des zweithemigen, feurig dahinstürmenden Allegro anstelle einer Durchführung wieder aufgenommen und in den lebhaften Gestus des Schlusssatzes umgewandelt. Mit dem Erklingen des eigentlichen Herzstück des Werkes als Adagio amoroso schließt das Werk, sicherlich sehr überraschend für Neue Musik. - Stefan Heucke.

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799) drew attention to himself even as a child due to his musical talent: At the age of seven he took violin lessons, only three years later he was hired as a violinist in Vienna and played little solos. His numerous compositions and particularly his 'singspiels' (song-plays) were very popular with the audience: Ditters von Dittersdorf's comedy 'Der Apotheker und der Doktor' even outdid Mozart's 'Le nozze di Figaro' in contemporary popularity in 1786. In 1766 Dittersdorf wrote the Violin Concerto in C major while being in service as leader of a music band in Großwardein, a post he had accepted in succession to Michael Haydn. The solo part was probably played by the composer himself at the first performance. The concerto is a work that is fun to play: A pleasant, particularly concertante Allegro moderato is followed by a playful cantabile Andante and a Presto as virtuoso finale.Das Violinkonzert C-Dur schrieb Dittersdorf im Jahre 1766 in seiner Zeit als Leiter der Musikkapelle in Großwardein, eine Stelle, die er in der Nachfolge von Michael Haydn angetreten hatte. Den Solopart dürfte der Komponist bei der Aufführung sicherlich selbst gespielt haben. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q5730). Stanley Weiner (1925-1951) is mainly remembered as a performer: a solo violinist. His musical career was predetermined for his father served as assistant principal violinist to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. At the age of 8, little Stanley gave solo performances, auditioned for Leonard Bernstein in 1947 and thus became the youngest principal violinist of the New York Symphony Orchestra. Weiner's career as a composer started rather late, at the age of 35, but then he wrote over 200 works, particularly instrumental music of all genres. The 'Latin American Suite', dedicated to the violin virtuoso David Oistrach, is an effective work which begins with a sweeping virtuoso Allegro con brio. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q7069). As a musician, Franz Ries (1846-1932) is almost forgotten today: the composer, violinist and 'Königl. Sächs. Hofmusikalienhändler' studied at the famous Paris Conservatoire to be a violinist. Then, the nephew of Beethoven's pupil and friend Ferdinand Ries started a glittering solo career which he had to end soon after for health reasons. From then on, he turned his whole attention to the music publishing business and occasionally even contributed little compositions, such as 'La Capricciosa' or the newly published 'Perpetuum mobile' Op. 34, to the programme of his publishing house. This is the fifth movement from his Suite No. 3 for violin and orchestra (or piano), created around 1870. The little virtuoso piece sweeps by like a whirlwind, hopefully taking only the listeners', not the violin playing performers' breath away!

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q20911). Die Sonate op. 38 entstand im November und Dezember 2000 und ist das einzige unmittelbar autobiographische Stück, das ich bisher komponiert habe. Es ist dem Gedenken eines toten Freundes gewidmet, den ich 17 Jahre lang aus den Augen verloren und im Sommer 2000 auf dem Friedhof wiedergefunden habe. Ein während der Zeit unserer Freundschaft im Herbst 1983 entstandener Plan für eine Violinsonate konnte nun verwirklicht werden. Die Initialen des Widmungsträgers – A.F. – beherrschen die gesamte Struktur des Werkes. Der erste, in unaufhaltsamer, wilder Bewegung voranstürmende Satz speist sich aus zwei ausladenden gesanglichen Themen, das erste aus dem Intervall A – F, das zweite aus dem Intervall (E)S - H gewonnen, die von unaufhörlichen Sechzehntelbewegungen des Klaviers vorangetrieben werden. Der zweite Satz schweißt drei Formteile in einen großen Variationssatz zusammen: Zunächst Thema und fünf Variationen über Brahms’ Volkslied Da unten im Tale, dann ein variierter Scherzosatz über eben dieses Thema und schließlich eine gedrängte Passacaglia, die auf der Basis des Klanges A - F die vergangenen musikalischen Ereignisse zusammenpresst. Zum Schluss erscheint noch einmal das Brahms-Lied in entrückter Klanggestalt in der entfernten Tonart E-Dur. Der Text dieses Liedes lautet: Da unten im Tale läufts Wasser so trüb, Und i kann dirs net sagen, i hab di so lieb. Sprichst allweil von Lieb, sprichst allweil von Treu, und a bissele Falschheit is au wohl dabei. Und wenn i dirs zehnmal sag, dass i di lieb, und du willst nit verstehen, muss i halt weiterziehen. The piano plays in chordal style most of the time as real accompaniment, with polyphonic ensemble playing not being given special emphasis. The sonata is characterized by melodious cantilenas of the violin, intricate rhythms and almost symphonic tonal eruptions alike. The piece demands great technical skills while actually seeming to be easy to grasp. Mustonen is one of the virtuoso pianists-composers of the younger generation. In his works, he often refers to the history and culture of his home country Finland. He performed the world premiere of his Violin Sonata with the young Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto in London in April 2013.

Cyril Scott composed the 'Three Lyrical Pieces' for violin and piano at the beginning of the 20th century and dedicated them to his friend, the violinist Paul Stoeving, professor at the Guildhall School of Music. 'Élégie' strikes a delicate salon-like tone which runs through the entire three-part cycle. It is especially in the melodic lines of the violin that a dedidedly poetic tonal language emerges. 'Romance' impresses with Impressionist plays of colours, especially on the piano. In 'Valse triste', the extravagant composer, who had become known not only by his compositions but by writings on philosophy, occultism and homeopathy as well, adds to the salon music character in three-four time with well-measured minor clouding.
