The “Hallel†signifies the praise; the Jah (Yah) is part of God’s covenant name Yahweh. This name was and is so holy that it is not uttered by Jews lest they violate the 4th Commandment.♫ There is an interesting sequence in the Psalm. Three times we see a progression of high to low, from the heavens to the earth, from the clouds to the insects, from kings to children. The tone poem begins in the highest range of the piano and solo instrument, and gradually moves down to the lower ones.♫ The 3 themes are set in the Lydian, Dorian, and Phrygian modes.♫ This .pdf file includes 14 score choices • Letter size score for Violin & piano • Letter size solo parts for Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or trombone), & Cello • 10 inch tablet size score for violin & piano • 10 inch tablet size score for the same solo parts. ♫ (Tell your computer which pages you want to print. The most basic pattern of the Psalm of Lament is the complaint followed by a statement of confidence. The Psalm of Lament progresses from the pain, doubt, and confusion caused by problems and suffering to a statement of belief that God knows and understands and will act for the good of the psalmist. This statement of confidence is not given after God has rescued, but while the psalmist is still in crisis. This is what makes the words a Psalm and not faithless murmurings that God condemns.♫ The opening words of the Psalm, “A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son,†(NASB) are actually the first verse of the Psalm 3 in the Hebrew Bible, not merely an editorial comment by a current scholar.
