The music was composed in the 19th century by Colonel Sanford C. 'Sandy' Faulkner (1806–1874); the current official lyrics were written by a committee in 1947 in preparation for its naming as the state song. This set of the theme and variations is useful for both teaching and concert performance. There are a variety of rhythms and bowing techniques, and any section beyond the capabilities of the student may be omitted. .

Journeying is a new and original composition designed around a long and exciting travel. This piece modulates constantly to show the changing environments of the journey, yet maintains the walking and bouncy pace of the adventurer. This solo is designed to show off the player's ability to perform accurate and clean arpeggios in 10 different major keys, as well as their ability keep the constant walking pace throughout the entire song.Journeying was selected as the winner for the University of Toledo Young Composers Competition in 2020.Includes full score and individual solo part.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

English • German.Hungarian composer and violinist Jenö Hubay, born Eugen Huber, received his musical training in Budapest and made his concert début with Viotti’s Violin Concerto No. 22 in A minor. He spent three years in Berlin, where he studied violin with Joseph Joachim. After his return he met Franz Liszt, who recommended that he travel to Paris. In that city he was a welcome guest at musical salons; he also formed a friendship with Henri Vieuxtemps. Hubay taught groups of violin students first in Brussels, then for a long time in Budapest. For twenty-five years he toured Europe as a virtuoso violinist, settling in Switzerland for a while before returning to Budapest for the rest of his life. His chamber compositions include a series of little pieces very probably written for his own use at musical salons, along with character pieces reminiscent of his Hungarian homeland and exotic pieces such as Plaintes arabes (Arabian Lament), an expressive and mournful lament on the violin. His musical journey began under the guidance of his father, Lajos Vecsey, but it was his subsequent studies with renowned violinist Jenő Hubay that truly shaped his virtuosity. At the tender age of 10, he impressed none other than Joseph Joachim with his exceptional skills, solidifying his status as a child prodigy.However, in the 1930s, tragedy struck. Just as Vecsey was poised to fulfill his dreams, he fell gravely ill with a pulmonary embolism, a condition that plagued him throughout his life. Seeking medical treatment, he traveled to Rome, where he underwent surgery in the hope of a recovery. Unfortunately, the operation proved unsuccessful, and at the tragically young age of 42, Franz de Vecsey succumbed to his illness.His piece, Valse Triste in C minor, composed in 1913 and dedicated to Princesse Elena Lante della Rovere, serves as a poignant reminder of Vecsey's musical genius. Through its haunting melodies and evocative harmonies, the composition encapsulates the depth of his emotions and the profound beauty of his art. Though his life was cut tragically short, Franz de Vecsey's legacy lives on.

English • German.On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the German performing rights society GEMA in 2003 La Paloma von Sebastián de Yradier was chosen as the ‘song of the century’. The Spanish composer began his career as an organist and then taught singing in Madrid before moving to Paris. In 1857 he travelled to the Caribbean, developing an interest in the Habañera form and Creole music. Drawing inspiration from this experience he composed numerous pieces with Spanish influence which were published individually by Schott in 1870 in the series Fleurs d’Espagne, 2me collection. Of these, only No. 14 has survived: The Dove (in Spanish La Paloma) is possibly the most often played, arranged and recorded piece of all time. Otto Langey added a pretty introduction to his arrangement for violin (1890). It is a popular piece for domestic music-making. More recent recordings featuring Hans Albers, Freddy Quinn, Elvis Presley and many others, have made this Spanish serenade with its typical Habañera accompaniment famous, and it can readily be played at home, too. Edition based on plate no. 02567, first published in 1890 as plate no. 24490.

Although the dance died out in the next century, the musical form continued into the 20th Century. THE LAST PAVANE was composed by Enrique Granados, a composer of classical music and concert pianist from Catalonia, Spain. This may have been one of his last compositions for piano. He died an early and tragic death when the ship he was traveling on was sunk by a German torpedo in the English Channel in 1916. This arrangement is an INTERMEDIATE VIOLIN SOLO with a PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT. A separate music sheet for the violin is included with the score.

In the time of travelling violin virtuosos in the 19th century, the Belgian composer Henri Vieuxtemps was regarded as one of the 'greatest', next to Paganini, Spohr, Bériot, Wieniawski and others. His concert tours led him to the 'new world' and through Europe to Russia where he lived in Petersburg for a few years and founded the violin class at the local conservatoire.
