Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada. The Sonata begins with Introduction and features a melodic and romantic theme with beautiful chords. Hoedown, in D minor, is very lively and tuneful. The Waltz is a lovely theme that undergoes some insightful development. The finale, Gigue, is a 6/8 dance which is quite a romp and features some fast bow work on a very catchy tune. This is The 2nd mvt of the Wind Trio Op.87 I have transcribed the original parts, but have added further instruments so that it can be performed by other combinations. Parts included are: Wind Trio 1.oboe 1/clarinet in Bb 1 2.oboe 2 /clarinet in Bb 2 3.cor anglais/alto clarinet 3a. bassoon/bass clarinet (lower octave than cor a) Flutes could also play the oboe parts.

It was adapted from the middle section of the second movement of an earlier work, The Thresher, Sonata For Strings, which has never yet been played. I had always felt that this Larghetto section of music was extra special somehow, needing to escape as a little piece in its own right. Writing it for Julia Kiefner gave me the special opportunity to achieve this.
