This little suite for beginner string orchestra aims to put into practice as many of the different technical aspects of the ABRSM Grade 1 exam as possible, whilst remaining a fun piece to play! The cheerful first movement is in D major. There is some use of open string double stops and a chance for the 2nd violins to show off their left hand pizzicato, whilst the legato cello melody in the middle section explores the 1234 chromatic finger pattern. The short second movement, which is really no more than a brief interlude, is in A major, and provides the opportunity to focus on controlling slurs and legato bowing. 4th fingers instead of open Es in the 1st violins are desirable but not compulsory! Finally, the third Latin-inspired movement is a syncopation-filled exploration of the E minor natural scale. If you have some percussion instruments at hand please feel free to get creative and add them in wherever you like! The piece can be played without double basses, but if there are none it might be an idea for one desk of cellos to cover the bass part in the first movement middle section. 3rd violins are only necessary if there are no violas, or if violas need an extra boost!

Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522247). Shetland Sunrise is a movement from Colin Kirkpatrick's suite for elementary string orchestra entitled “Atlantic Highwayâ€. Ideal for end-of-semester concerts or any other school or college concert occasion, these tuneful and attractive pieces are bound to please audience and instrumentalists alike. The work is scored for violins 1 and 2, viola (with an identical but optional part for violin 3 in treble clef), cello, double bass and piano (or digital keyboard). The piano part is an integral part of music and therefore essential. However, it’s not especially difficult and perfectly manageable by the intermediate pianist. All the string parts can be played in first position. Pizzicato is used extensively in the double bass part and in some of the passages for the upper strings. Shetland Sunrise is in G major throughout and the time signature begins in 5/8. This might look a bit daunting to elementary places not used to seeing it but the music is a good deal easier than it appears. Because every 5/8 measure (bar) naturally falls into groups of 3 and 2 beats, the players should be told to count 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, rather than one to five. They will soon pick up the irregular lilting rhythm. There are also a couple of measures of 7/8 in this piece, which should be counted as 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2. The string parts have been produced in fairly large type making them ideal for elementary players. Cues have been added where necessary.

Students also develop some of the many skills involved in instrumental playing faster than other skills.The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series for Easy String Orchestra has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts).Each piece has a total of 5 different parts which are fully interchangeable between violins, violas and cellos (double basses can double the cello parts). So whether you have 15 violins and a viola, or 3 violins, or 4 cellos or whatever, the pieces will still work well together. All parts are provided for all instruments.Part 5 uses long notes on open strings. The other parts gradually increase in difficulty up to Part 1, which uses first and second positions. The teacher should select appropriate parts for the players in the group.I GOT THE BLUES is the second piece in this series, and uses typical Blues characteristics such as syncopation and swung quavers. Despite this piece being playable with only open strings and first finger, the backing track makes it sound much more complex and advanced! The following are assumed to be learnt in advance: Violin 1 / Viola 1 / Cello 1 / Double Bass: Crotchets (quarter notes), minims (half notes) and dotted minims (dotted half notes), crotchet rests (quarter rests). Open strings and first finger one tone higher on G, D and A strings. Violin A / Viola A (A for advanced): the above plus second and third fingers making the tone-tone-semitone shape from the open string. Violoncello A: the above plus all four fingers in first shape. The use of second finger is clearly marked. As many or a few parts as required can perform the piece, though the 1 parts have the true melody if used alone. Admittedly the Double Bass part musically interferes with the bass part of the backing track but is added for inclusion purposes. The backing track adds considerably and is essential for the performance. It can be bought separately from the same website. Dorian can also be a name for a person. In this composition, I have imagined Dorian to be the protagonist on a hero’s journey. The music creates a narrative of our main character Dorian growing up, going on a grand adventure, and finally returning home, enriched by so many experiences.

Given the nature of the piece, the challenge is to control the bowing and avoid producing a tone that is too scratchy and harsh. Â In the section where the upperstrings accompany with staccato open fifths, care should be taken to bounce the bow lightly enough to allow the legato melody in the lower strings to flourish. Â The pizzicato section is a delightful contrast which offers practice in switching to and from arco and pizzicato. Finally, keeping an even tempo throughout despite regularly occurring rhythms is consistent with the piece's title.
