Allegretto.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are pretty typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.Beethoven's Bagatelle No. 3 of Op. 33 showcases the composer's evolving style. Bagatelle No. 3 is in ternary form, with a lively and playful A section in F major that features a chromatic mediant relation. The A section is characterized by a rhythmic motif that is repeated throughout the piece, while the B section develops a lyrical melody that modulates briefly to the dominant: C major. The piece ends with a return to the A section, which is played with slight variations. Overall, Bagatelle No. 3 is a charming and delightful piece that showcases Beethoven's mastery of form and his ability to create memorable melodies.

The Dolly Suite, Op. 56, is a collection of pieces for piano duet by Gabriel Fauré. It consists of six short pieces written or revised between 1893 and 1896, to mark the birthdays and other events in the life of the daughter of the composer's mistress, Emma Bardac.An orchestral version of the suite was scored in 1906 by Henri Rabaud, and has, like the original piano duet version, been the subject of many recordings. The best-known section of the suite, the Berceuse, has been arranged for several combinations of instruments. In the United Kingdom it became famous as the play-out tune to the BBC radio programme Listen with Mother.The suite consists of six short pieces, each with its own title: Berceuse, Mi-a-ou, Le jardin de Dolly, Kitty-valse, Tendresse, and Le pas espagnol. The complete suite takes about fifteen minutes to perform.The Berceuse was the closing theme for the long-running BBC Light Programme (and later Home Service) radio programme for small children Listen with Mother (1950–1982). It is performed in the film Bicentennial Man by Andrew and Little Miss. Although it was written as a piano duet, there have been numerous arrangements of the Berceuse for other instruments and ensembles. Examples include versions for piano and glockenspiel by Evelyn Glennie and for two guitars recorded by Julian Bream and John Williams.

The show was performed four times to parents of the children of the school and was a huge success at the time.  I decided that many of the melodies could be incorporated into my concert pieces and this piece is one such example. It can be enjoyed by both professionals and students alike. It is rhythmic and tuneful, with  a Russian folk song flavour.There are two arrangements available:No. 1 – School arrangement:  for Violins 1, 2 and 3, cellos 1 and 2 No. 2 – Standard:  for Violins 1 and 2, viola, cello and Double Bass.

Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra). Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra). The first section consists of a joyful and brilliant major opening and transition to a minor tonality. The first section features some bends and special percussive sound effects. The second section is a romantic ballad, which explores tension and release cycles which resolves dissonant chords and create a relaxing feeling. The last section is sudden and abrupt, and begins with an unusual 7/4 fast pattern. The melody first plays on high strings and then varied on the low strings to create contrast. It builds up into a climax and finish with a few powerful and chords in rhythmic unison.

A hugely enjoyable arrangement for string orchestra of three movements from Purcell's grand and powerful Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary. This music was also played at Purcell's own funeral shortly after. 1. Funeral March2. Thou Knowest, Lord3. Canzona IIThe three contrasting movements include slow, powerful chords, contrapuntal moving parts and fugue-like lively themes. This arrangement includes a violin III part which can be used if no violas are available. The double bass part, whilst making a significant contribution, could also be omitted if no basses are available. All of Emma's arrangements find creative and artistic ways to re-present original pieces in a way that suits the new instruments and ensemble whilst maintaining the integrity of the original piece. Her aim is to go far beyond a simple copying of the melody and harmony, but to create an arrangement that sounds as if the piece was always meant for these new instruments.

While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.
