Presto.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are pretty typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.Bagatelle No. 7 of Beethoven's Op. 33 is a charming and playful piece, typical of Beethoven's early style. The piece is in A-flat major and marked Presto, which means fast. The main theme is catchy, fragmentary, and light, with a playful character that is maintained throughout the piece. The middle section is more lyrical and expressive, providing a sostenuto contrast to the playful character of the main theme. The piece is well-crafted and attractive. The piano collection The Four Seasons (originally titled Les Saisons) is known as a collection of 12 piano pieces, one for each month, depicting the customs of the Russian year. To me, as the arranger, it seems to strongly reflect scenes from the composer's own homeland, Ukraine.Tchaikovsky's Ukrainian roots are not surprising. Tchaikovsky's surname was changed from Chaika (Чайка: a traditional Ukrainian surname meaning seagull) by his grandfather, and his family originated from the Chaika family of Ukrainian Cossacks who had a territory in what is now Poltava Oblast.

Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522247). Shetland Sunrise is a movement from Colin Kirkpatrick's suite for elementary string orchestra entitled “Atlantic Highwayâ€. Ideal for end-of-semester concerts or any other school or college concert occasion, these tuneful and attractive pieces are bound to please audience and instrumentalists alike. The work is scored for violins 1 and 2, viola (with an identical but optional part for violin 3 in treble clef), cello, double bass and piano (or digital keyboard). The piano part is an integral part of music and therefore essential. However, it’s not especially difficult and perfectly manageable by the intermediate pianist. All the string parts can be played in first position. Pizzicato is used extensively in the double bass part and in some of the passages for the upper strings. Shetland Sunrise is in G major throughout and the time signature begins in 5/8. This might look a bit daunting to elementary places not used to seeing it but the music is a good deal easier than it appears. Because every 5/8 measure (bar) naturally falls into groups of 3 and 2 beats, the players should be told to count 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, rather than one to five. They will soon pick up the irregular lilting rhythm. There are also a couple of measures of 7/8 in this piece, which should be counted as 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2. The string parts have been produced in fairly large type making them ideal for elementary players. Cues have been added where necessary.

Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra). The composer began it as an elegy to both his father and to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but since it was completed so much later, he removed that dedication from the performance materials. The mood is nevertheless deeply sad and piercingly poignant. The musical language is 12-tone, but is loaded with minor triads/trichords tinged with dissonances and contextual resolutions, most of which sound like suspended fourths. Duration: 7:00.

The first section consists of a joyful and brilliant major opening and transition to a minor tonality. The first section features some bends and special percussive sound effects. The second section is a romantic ballad, which explores tension and release cycles which resolves dissonant chords and create a relaxing feeling. The last section is sudden and abrupt, and begins with an unusual 7/4 fast pattern. The melody first plays on high strings and then varied on the low strings to create contrast. It builds up into a climax and finish with a few powerful and chords in rhythmic unison.

A Moderato of about 4 mins duration, an Andante, the featured portion of the suite, running about 7 mins, and a final Allegro, all clocking in at just under 14 mins. ALL notes are playable in first position for ALL sections, of course! The basses sometimes shift to 1 1/2 position, as is the usual pedagogy for their instrument. No fast notes across strings or trills. A minimum of accidentals. These three pieces use tightly controlled rhythms, intervals, and melodic fragments, to create a maximum of symphonic euphony through the combination of just a few musical elements. The audio clip is the complete suite. This work can be the centerpiece of a concert for a youth orchestra, a community group, or a high school ensemble. The phrases are not longer than 4 notes, many are two-note groups, making the choices for bowings much easier than longer strings of notes.
