The creatures range in size and temperament from small and feisty to large and lazy and everything in-between. The piece is intermediate difficulty and is good for ensembles at the university level and higher. There are no extended techniques. It’s possible to play this piece as a string quintet instead of for orchestra but some of the divisi may take some time to sort out.

Published by Paul Sweet Music (A0.940136). Machinations, a 4 minute concert piece perfect for advanced high school or college level players, opens in a sort of rhythmic and tonal gridlock. Short sequences of notes in each part overlap and struggle to break free from the others, sometimes shifting slightly upward or downward. Slowly, new harmonies and dissonances are created by these shifts, taking the music to a breaking point where a new theme finally pushes through. A more outgoing middle section surges ahead relentlessly, each of the parts working now more as a group than before. Eventually, though, it becomes clear that the gridlock of the beginning must return. The third and final section seems at first to be a repeat of the opening material, but the appearance of music from the middle section lets the listener know this is not the case. Themes from all over the work soon blend and overlap, growing in intensity until the climax implodes and the work comes to a quiet and uneasy end. Machinations, by definition, are plots or schemes. I imagined, as I wrote the work, that each instrumental part was scheming about how it would break free from the rigid and meticulous pattern of the opening measures. By the same token, it was clear that some undefined force was plotting ways to keep the music in this form. Imagine these secret plots and maneuvers as you play or conduct the work for maximum effectiveness.

This piece begins like a dramatic symphony which will seem familiar to some students, but then it kicks into a minor Celtic reel (Celtic dance in common time). First violins will enjoy the fast fiddling melody and string crossings, while the other sections enjoy syncopated rhythmic accompaniment. The reel shifts into an old time (a style of bluegrass) melody and includes the cello and bass sections playing the melody. A chorale-like section gives students a break from fiddling and a chance to employ delicate legato playing. It concludes with the reel melody in the upper strings, while the lower strings carry a heavy quarter note drive. Even with simplification, the melody - which everyone plays unison at the beginning - will be the most difficult part. Take time with it, break it down, and help them get used to those rests. After that, there are three sections that I have labeled in the score that are either harmony or melody. Each instrument plays each of these parts at some point in the piece, but not at the same time. This makes rehearsing and learning the harmony together easy! Obviously, you should put the title of some other piece in your program and Rick Roll your audience - I introduced this piece as Symphony in G by Mozart. This is a really fun way to open a concert.

The buildups coming back with the col legno hitting the instruments, the harmonic minor sixteenth note scale descending three times with violins back to back. From intense to furioso, comes with the fortississimo, fast eighth and sixteenth notes. The strings stabbing the accents and marcatos with the grandly end!

INDIVIDUAL INSTRUMENTS PARTS 2 of 2 (Harp and Strings).  This four act contemporary opera, original libretto and music, by 21st century American composer James Nathaniel Holland is the story of the triumph of Love over Evil, however delayed, and the power of keeping steadfast to one’s righteous promise.  Based on the German fairy tale The Six Swans, in a kingdom, during Saxon times, the murderous daughter of an evil entity, Ravia, infiltrates and takes over the lives of a royal family due to the King’s rash promise to marry her many years before. The royal children are sent away by their father for safety to a hidden, woodland cottage, but Ravia discovers where they are and hexes the younger siblings, turning them into swallows.  Usha, the eldest, escapes and flees to the wilderness and is visited by the apparition of her dead mother who explains what is going on and that Usha must swear an oath of silence for six years to break the spell and change her siblings back into human form.Five years pass and a dashing and kind king, Rohric, of another kingdom, finds Usha while hunting, falls in love with and marries her, but Usha must remain silent and cannot reveal who she is.  Ravia, who now is sole queen of the old kingdom, is invited by Rohric’s nobles with hope to secure a “proper†wedding for Rohric.  Usha is accused falsely of killing her own child by the two and is sentenced to be burned at the stake, but as the bell tolls she finally can declare her innocence.  To the crowd’s amazement her siblings change back, all truth is revealed, and for Ravia’s failure, she is dragged back to hell by demons.  Singers:  King Alfred (bass), Ravia (soprano), Princess Usha (mezzo), Queen Mother Arna (soprano), the royal siblings (children’s/boy’s chorus), King Rohric (Tenor), The Evil Noble (baritone), An angel/a demon (bass), SATB ChorusScored for full orchestra.  Instrumentation:  picc/treble recorder, fl12, ob12, eh, cl12, bsn12, hrn 123, tpt123, trom12, tba, timp, perc.12 (bd, crash cym, ride cym with soft mallets and stick, small gong, wood blk, glk, chimes, snar, tri), hrp, stringsDuration:  2 hoursFull Orchestral Score (concert pitch), Piano Vocal Score and Instruments Parts 1 (woodwinds, brass, perc.) and Parts 2 (harp and strings) sold separately.
