Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. In 1942, during World War II, the British government set up a small base in the North Sea just outside British territorial waters (at the time). After the war, the fort was abandoned, but, in 1967, Roy Bates, a pirate radio broadcaster, claimed it as the Principality of Sealand. The British government’s stated view is that Sealand is within British jurisdiction. Sealand generally is classified as a micronation (a nation project set up by an individual or group, and has no international recognition.)As pertaining to the anthem, it was composed by London composer Basil Simonenko in conjunction with the governing Bates family, and has no words. The title of the anthem is also the motto of Sealand.Principality of Sealand: The Principality of Sealand (/ˈsiːˌlænd/) is a micronation that claims HM Fort Roughs (also known as Roughs Tower), an offshore platform in the North Sea approximately 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) off the coast of Suffolk, as its territory. Roughs Tower is a Maunsell Sea Fort that was built by the British during World War II. Since 1967, the decommissioned Roughs Tower has been occupied and claimed as a sovereign state by the family and associates of Paddy Roy Bates. Bates seized Roughs Tower from a group of pirate radio broadcasters in 1967 with the intention of setting up his own station there. Being of Italian heritage I especially thought it would be fun to compose The Godmother which contains very small hints of the theme from The Godfather throughout.  See if you can pick them out. Thinking back into my past I visualized all my Italian relatives in the family and the life style we led which helped give the composition that Italian flair. I truly believe you, your students and your audience will enjoy this piece. Written for the Intermediate level the composition includes full score and parts for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello and St. Bass. THE EMPEROR’S HYMN by Joseph Haydn is one of the most famous played pieces in music and was written in honor of the Emperor Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later of the Austrian Empire. This tune has since been widely employed in other contexts: in works of classical music, in Christian hymns, in alma maters, and as the tune for the national anthem of Germany Although playable and enjoyed on all levels it is written for young string players on the easy intermediate level and is scored in 3 part harmony with viola doubling 2nd violin and cello doubling string bass. In the event instrumentation is lacking this concept will make your group sound fuller and give your players more confidence. Includes full score and parts for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello and String Bass. It is written in D Major and modulates to G Major. I hope you and your students enjoy performing this piece. This marvelous arrangement of Peter Tchaikovsky's Coronation March, sometimes called Festival March or Festival Coronation March, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and other festive occasions. This arrangement keeps all of the intensity and excitement of the original composition and is suitable for high school and college students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (26 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available to the public for the first time. The Coronation March was ordered by the city of Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1883. It was written during March of 1883 and was performed for the first time on June 4, 1883 in Sokolniky Park in Moscow, conducted by Sergei Taneyev. The music then included excerpts of the anthem, God Save the Tsar. The American premiere was on May 5, 1891, for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City, conducted by Tchaikovsky himself. During the Soviet Era, Russian performances and recordings of the music were revised to omit the excerpts from the Czarist national anthem, replacing it with thematic material used earlier in the march, due to an official Soviet ban on the anthem. Starting with Dmitri Medvedev's inauguration in 2008, an abbreviated version of this piece is played during the Russian presidential inauguration accompanying the entrance of the incoming president, and ends well before the playing in this piece of the Tsarist anthem God Save the Tsar. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, the Coronation March does not have an opus number. It has been given alternative catalogue designations TH 50 and CW 47. Tchaikovsky's Coronation March was originally scored for a full orchestra and written in the key of D Major. Regis Bookshar has now created an abbreviated version, written in Db Major, and has arranged it for a String Orchestra, with parts for 3 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Violoncellos and 1 Double Bass. In addition to this arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Coronation March for a String Orchestra, other arrangements of this festive composition for various instrumental ensembles are also available. I first met Mum when I was 19 years old while serving in the US Navy and she immediately treated me with such kindness which I never forgot. After losing contact for a number of years I was so glad and fortunate that I was able to once again be a small part of her life. You will be dearly missed Mum by so many. There are no good-byes because loved ones will always live in our hearts. REMEMBER ALWAYS is written for intermediate students and includes full score and parts for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, String Bass and optional Soprano and Baritone vocals. The vocal parts are vocalised without the use of words such as in the final movement of The Planets by Holst. As an example the vowel ‘ah‘ could be used but the choice will be the director’s. Perform this work with only one to a part or use multiples for a fuller sound. It can also be performed without the vocals.
