Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!Combine these with the set for Band when used for Full or Chamber Orchestra.

The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship Pick-A-Part Arrangement for String Orchestra by Dr. Grant Gilman String Orchestra Parts in This Pick-A-Part Arrangement Violin 1A Violin 1B Violin 1C Violin 2A Violin 2B Violin 2C Viola A Viola B Viola C Cello A Cello B Cello C Bass A Bass B Bass C Harp/Keyboard (optional)About Pick-A-Part Arrangement This arrangement system employs simultaneous, multi-level difficulty parts for each string section. The goal is to accommodate all levels of playing in the preparation and performance of a symphonic masterwork. In this arrangement, there are 3 difficulty levels for each individual string section, labeled A, B, and C, respectively. Each level is a decreasing level of technical and musical difficulty, level A being the highest level of difficulty. The A level is close to, if not exactly the same as, the original string part, plus the integration of wind parts when applicable. B and C follow in a proportional reduction of difficulty level. For this solution to be most effective, some students should be encouraged to play the most challenging parts simultaneously with those playing the simpler parts. This presents the opportunity to participate in a performance that includes most of the original material. The B and C parts cover enough of the surface material while maintaining a modicum of independence from the A part. In other words, the B and C parts are able to hold their own in performance without the A parts. For example, let’s say you have a couple of talented violinists and a few more that are well below their playing level, only two violists that need a great deal of help, a plethora of cellists with a wide range of abilities, and one single bass player that is a beginner. Your distribution of parts may look something like this: Violin 1 - two on Violin 1A, one on Violin 1C, and the rest on Violin 1B Violin 2 - one on Violin 2B, the rest on Violin 2C Viola - both on Viola C Cello - three on Cello A, one on Cello B, and the rest on Cello C Bass - one on Bass C This potential setup will challenge each player at their current level of development while creating the context for a moving experience with a major orchestral work. A Note about the Score and Printing The full score is designed to be printed in portrait orientation on 17x11 tabloid size paper. Even at this size, the score can be confusing to read, especially if you are not covering every difficulty level part. He is most well known for his performance career as a classical crossover and popular music artist with 11 CD recordings, numerous awards and accolades, and performances with the likes of Luciano Pavorotti, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Baez. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing. Vivaldi's Concerto RV 93 was originally written for lute or guitar solo plus strings and basso continuo. Here, the 1st movement of the concerto has been arranged for an intermediate-level student string orchestra without continuo or piano accompaniment. To this end, the work has been simplified: the original key of D major has been changed to C major; some rhythms have been simplified, including doubling all note values and changing the time signature to 2/2; some registers have been changed in order to keep parts in 1st position; and extensive dynamics and articulations have been added to assist students with musical interpretation according to Baroque music conventions. That said, some crescendos have been added for effect. It is anticipated that the one repeat will be done, as is traditional. The upper strings are expected to be able to play low 2nd and 4th fingers, and the cellos have both backward and forward extensions but only leave 1st position in two short identical passages. Your students and audience will both have lots of fun, and this is really effective in recruitment concerts as well. The piece starts with some percussive stomps and slaps that sound great on stage and are instantly recognizable. The 6/8 meter may be a challenge if your students haven't played in that rhythmic space before, but the familiarity of the song will help. The song is squarely in D harmonic minor, and as such gives a good opportunity to practice F natural, B flat, and low C# fingerings. This piece is a blast and I know your students will enjoy playing it.

Published by John T Sarno (A0.904424). This is a fun piece for an intermediate-level string orchestra. It is the third arrangement of mine that is a mash-up of traditional Christmas carols. This arrangement features religious Christmas carols. Included are: Angles We Have Heard on High; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Away in a Manger; Cradle Song (Away in a Manger); Joy to the World; In the Bleak Midwinter. In different places in the piece, different string sections play different melodies at the same time. There is a triangle part to be played as a fun part. There is a Flute solo, but it can be played on any C instrument. More instructions are given at the end of the score for how these parts should be played. While it is mostly a pizzicato piece there are some bowing sections. It also gives the player a challenge to play pizzicato while holding the bow in certain sections. The Herald Angels Singâ€.  It begins as a 4 part chorale (like the original) and then the melody is played up-side down and backwards with counterpoint in the vln. 2, vla and ‘cello.  It then returns back to a chorale style in a little faster tempo to a big finish. For string orchestra, key of G, moderato tempo in 4/4 time.  Bowings are marked, fingerings used are L2, H3 and 4 in the violin. Viola uses 1/2 position, ‘cello uses H4 and 2. Bass uses 2nd finger. Contains slurs and ‘cello and bass use hooked bows.  Grade 2 (2+) approx. perf 3:30.
