Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.1392366). The Thunderer (1889) is one of John Philip Sousa's most beloved marches. It is knot known to what, or more likely to whom, the title refers. Paul E. Bierley suggests that since the work was dedicated the the Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, of Washington, D.C., and composed for its Twenty-fourth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment, that the title may refer to Myron M. Parker, one of the principal men responsible for the success of the conclave.(1)Sousa is so universally loved, that it seems a shame to restrict his performance only to marching bands and concert bands. A hugely enjoyable arrangement for string orchestra of three movements from Purcell's grand and powerful Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary. Canzona IIThe three contrasting movements include slow, powerful chords, contrapuntal moving parts and fugue-like lively themes. This arrangement includes a violin III part which can be used if no violas are available. The double bass part, whilst making a significant contribution, could also be omitted if no basses are available. All of Emma's arrangements find creative and artistic ways to re-present original pieces in a way that suits the new instruments and ensemble whilst maintaining the integrity of the original piece. Her aim is to go far beyond a simple copying of the melody and harmony, but to create an arrangement that sounds as if the piece was always meant for these new instruments.

Published by Ingrande Music Production (A0.1318904). This is a march and calls for using the lower half of the bow. Â Here the bow hair is more taught and produces a heavy and somehat coarse sound. Given the nature of the piece, the challenge is to control the bowing and avoid producing a tone that is too scratchy and harsh. Â In the section where the upperstrings accompany with staccato open fifths, care should be taken to bounce the bow lightly enough to allow the legato melody in the lower strings to flourish. Â The pizzicato section is a delightful contrast which offers practice in switching to and from arco and pizzicato. Finally, keeping an even tempo throughout despite regularly occurring rhythms is consistent with the piece's title.
