String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719773 Composed by Many. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Renaissance. Score and parts. 60 pages. Curtis Hanson #6258371. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719773). Hey string players and teachers, are you looking for something different to program or teach your students? This collection of pieces, suitable for beginning and experienced ensembles, may be what you’re looking for. For the choral musician, the secular music of the 16th and early 17th centuries comprise some of the most delightful works of early repertoire. The madrigals, lieder, and chansons in this collection are arranged for string quartet and quintet. The intent of these arrangements is to enable the instrumental musician an opportunity to experience a genre perhaps less familiar, with its varying degrees of rhythmic complexity and the juxtaposed interplay of duple and triple rhythmic figures. In keeping with the period, no dynamics are indicated, and articulations are kept at a minimum. Traditionally, repeated sections are to be played at a softer dynamic, but nothing is written in stone. For the up-tempo piece, as many are, rhythmic cleanliness and clarity are paramount, particularly in the iconic Fa-la-la sections. Accordingly, although they may be warranted, no slurs are given. Occasional staccatos are suggested for crispness. Vocal breath marks (') above the staff are meant to serve as guides in phrasing only, and tempos are only suggestions. As non-sacred works, they are generally not meant as 'serious' music, but rather as the music of the common people. Bottom line, they are meant to be fun, and the performer is free to interpret as desired. This collection is a companion to the arranger’s series of Renaissance Motets Arranged for Strings. With the purchase of this collection, permission is granted to photocopy parts as needed. The audio example is of the first few pieces in the collection.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1286698 Composed by James Nathaniel Holland. 21st Century,Broadway,Contemporary,Musical/Show,Opera. Score and Parts. 146 pages. James Nathaniel Holland #877732. Published by James Nathaniel Holland (A0.1286698). INDIVIDUAL INSTRUMENTS PARTS 2 of 2 (Harp and Strings).  This four act contemporary opera, original libretto and music, by 21st century American composer James Nathaniel Holland is the story of the triumph of Love over Evil, however delayed, and the power of keeping steadfast to one’s righteous promise.  Based on the German fairy tale The Six Swans, in a kingdom, during Saxon times, the murderous daughter of an evil entity, Ravia, infiltrates and takes over the lives of a royal family due to the King’s rash promise to marry her many years before. The royal children are sent away by their father for safety to a hidden, woodland cottage, but Ravia discovers where they are and hexes the younger siblings, turning them into swallows.  Usha, the eldest, escapes and flees to the wilderness and is visited by the apparition of her dead mother who explains what is going on and that Usha must swear an oath of silence for six years to break the spell and change her siblings back into human form.Five years pass and a dashing and kind king, Rohric, of another kingdom, finds Usha while hunting, falls in love with and marries her, but Usha must remain silent and cannot reveal who she is.  Ravia, who now is sole queen of the old kingdom, is invited by Rohric’s nobles with hope to secure a “proper†wedding for Rohric.  Usha is accused falsely of killing her own child by the two and is sentenced to be burned at the stake, but as the bell tolls she finally can declare her innocence.  To the crowd’s amazement her siblings change back, all truth is revealed, and for Ravia’s failure, she is dragged back to hell by demons.  Singers:  King Alfred (bass), Ravia (soprano), Princess Usha (mezzo), Queen Mother Arna (soprano), the royal siblings (children’s/boy’s chorus), King Rohric (Tenor), The Evil Noble (baritone), An angel/a demon (bass), SATB ChorusScored for full orchestra.  Instrumentation:  picc/treble recorder, fl12, ob12, eh, cl12, bsn12, hrn 123, tpt123, trom12, tba, timp, perc.12 (bd, crash cym, ride cym with soft mallets and stick, small gong, wood blk, glk, chimes, snar, tri), hrp, stringsDuration:  2 hoursFull Orchestral Score (concert pitch), Piano Vocal Score and Instruments Parts 1 (woodwinds, brass, perc.) and Parts 2 (harp and strings) sold separately.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416938 Composed by Dorothy Heyward, Du Bose Heyward, George Gershwin, and Ira Gershwin. Arranged by Travis Patton. Blues,Broadway,Chamber,Instructional,Jazz,Musical/Show. 26 pages. Travis Patton #998527. Published by Travis Patton (A0.1416938). Summertime by Gershwin for string orchestra or string quartet. This famous jazz standard begins with a mysterious opening and a recognizable bass line. Students will be challenged as the chart continues blending counter melodies, pulsing eighth notes, and flashy minor scales. An epic cinematic section gives a break from the groove and leads into an ominous pizzicato section and a haunting legato statement of the melody. Original material in the bridge allows students to be exposed to jazz harmonies with common tones, and the chart concludes with the original pulsing groove and another cinematic build to the finish line.Arranged by Travis Patton. www.travispatton.com.

String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1233596 Composed by Adrian Molina and Germaine Franco. Arranged by Michael Linert. Film/TV,Mariachi,Multicultural,World. Score and Parts. 81 pages. Michael Linert #829179. Published by Michael Linert (A0.1233596). Play and Sing Un Poco Loco from Disney's Coco!  This Multi-Level Masterpiece arrangement is scored for mariachi and string orchestral ensembles in a festival arrangement with a variety of levels from first-year players and beyond! Watch and Listen on YouTube! --> https://youtu.be/V1wBfV9cxFYEach purchase of this score/parts allows for 40 musicians to use this sheet music for one calendar year from purchase date. Here is some information to help make this arrangement work best! 1.    All parts in this arrangement can be played simultaneously in a festival-style performance. 2.    The most basic way to play this piece and have it sound like the piece would be to have the violin or viola part (normal or advanced) and a bass instrument (guitarrón, bass, or cello) playing while one or more singers play. 3.    Instruments could play the vocal parts, if necessary. 4.    Adding the foundational, normal, or advanced armonia (guitar, vihuela, or other chordal instruments) would enhance quite a bit. 5.    Adding the normal or advanced trumpet parts would add another layer. Their part doubles the violin/viola parts in most places, but there’s a part near the middle where their part varies to add complexity to the counterpoint. 6.    The foundational violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, and trumpet parts (normal sheet music) are in unison. They are a mixture of melody/harmonic writing and the bass parts. These parts should be played alongside 2 and 3 listed above. (4 and 5 too if you can!) 7.    The Foundational Notes sheets are one note per measure. In this piece, they are the main tonic chord tones. In this piece (but not in all Multi-Level Masterpieces), they also happen to be the basic major chords. These parts should be played alongside 2 and 3 listed above. (4, 5, and 6 too, if you can!)8.    If you have questions or happen to notice mistakes along the way, please do let me know (ML@michaellinert.com). My current terms of use at the time of publishing allow for use of this sheet music for one year from purchase date. This is so that I can continue to enhance these Multi-Level Masterpieces based on feedback from people performing them! I will likely also add additional instrumental parts (mainly band/general music) in the future. Thank you, and I hope you will enjoy!

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.942953 Composed by Geoffrey Peterson. Contemporary. Score and parts. 43 pages. Geoffrey Peterson #4267231. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.942953). Link to complete recording: https://soundcloud.com/geoffrey-peterson/sets/the-edmund-fitzgerald-concerto On November 9th, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. In addition, a chime is rung 29 times during the final bars of the concerto to memorialize the men who lost their lives. The Crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald: Michael E. Armagost, Frederick J. Beetcher, Thomas D. Bentsen, Edward F. Bindon, Thomas D. Borgeson, Oliver J. Champeau, Nolan S. Church, Ransom E. Cundy, Thomas E. Edwards, Russell G. Haskell, George J. Holl, Bruce L. Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.  From Darkness to Light is a beautiful instrumental piece in the movie that shows off the beauty of the water.  On paper, the music seems a little too simple, but the chord progressions together with the moving parts make for quite a beautiful and memorable piece.  This arrangement is scored for string orchestra - 3 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and double bass. One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer†comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  The Shimmer part could be played by wind chimes.  Franglen mentioned that they used keys hanging from strings (car keys, house keys, etc) to create this effect among other creative objects-turned-instruments.Duration: 3.75 minutes.

Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Multicultural,World. 28 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #783207. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.1183534). How is it that one can be born a slave in French colonial Guadeloupe and rise to be among Paris’ musical giants, to become a colonel in the French Army as well as the frequent dinner guest of princes and potentates? The story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is surely an interesting one, even the stuff of which movies are made.Joseph Bologne’s father, Georges Bologne de Saint-Georges was a French planter. Saint-Georges was the name of his plantation. He impregnated Anne, the Senegalese slave of his wife, who bore him a son in 1745. Uncharacteristic of many of these sort of relationships he acknowledged the child was his and gave him his family name. When he was seven Bologne’s father took him to Paris for his education, enrolling him in a boarding school. Two years later he and the child’s mother returned to France and set up housekeeping as a family in Paris’ Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. At age thirteen Joseph’s father enrolled him in the Royal Technical Academy of Fencing and Swordsmanship. He quickly became the finest swordsman in the academy, perhaps in all of Paris. Upon graduation he was made an Officer of the King’s Bodyguard and a chevalier (an honorary knighthood). He went on to serve tours of duty in the French Army during the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and later after the French Revolution, where he was Colonel and commander of an all-Black regiment of the Revolutionary Army. All this in spite of the fact that French law forbade him, a man of African heritage, to become a citizen, to retain his father’s royal title of “Gentleman of the King’s Chamber,†or to marry outside his class. There is limited information about Bologne’s musical training, but he was obviously so well-skilled that Italian violinist-composer Antonio Lolli (1725-1802) wrote two violin concertos for him and French composer François-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829) dedicated his set of String Trios, Op. 9 to Bologne. Lolli may have worked with him on violin technique and Gossec composition, but this may be apocryphal. Bologne played in Gossec’s orchestra, and was later both leader and conductor of the group. As a composer Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and were published by the Paris publishing house of Jean-Georges Sieber (1738-1822) in 1773 (There are a total of 18 quartets: Six Quartets “au goût du jour†[up-to-date] from 1779 and the Opus 14 set of six which date from 1785). The Opus 1 quartets are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck (Robecq) and Grand Duke of Spain. The Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the Eighteenth Century (often called “sinfoniaâ€) in that they have an overall “A-B-A†form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked “rondo.†As such, in arranging them for string orchestra it seemed quite natural to rename them “overtures.†Certain liberties were taken by the arranger in order to maintain the integrity of the classic Rondo formula. All six have been arranged in this manner for string orchestra. They vary in length from twelve to almost twenty minutes. If you wish to obtain parts, write to debbaut@gmail.com and pay $42 via venmo or $40 via personal check and they will be sent to you in pdf format.

Guthrie, ASCAP. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Traditional. Score and Parts. 19 pages. Jmsgu3 #807198. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1209097). 5. Allegro ma non troppo.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are pretty typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.Bagatelle No. 5 of Beethoven's Op. 33 is a short piece that showcases the composer's mastery of melody and harmony. The piece is in the key of C major and is written in a simple ternary form, with a lively and playful opening theme that is followed by a contrasting middle section in the homotonic key of C minor. The opening theme is characterized by its use of syncopation, which give it a lively and energetic feel. The middle section, on the other hand, is more introspective and lyrical, with a more subdued and melancholic mood. The piece ends with a return to the opening theme, which is now played in a surprising and forceful manner. Overall, Bagatelle No. 5 is a charming and delightful piece that showcases Beethoven's skill in creating memorable melodies and harmonies within a concise and compact form.

All the cool melodies are split between the violins and the cellos while the bass plays moving bass lines but the poor viola, left to the last bits of harmony no one else is using. But in Voila Viola!, the viola is the star! The cheerful melody allows room for the viola to really express itself while being backed by moving harmonies. This piece is great for teaching timing and listening to the other players. Wide ranging eighth notes dominate this piece with emphasis on the viola's changing melodies while the backing harmonies keep the piece with the playfulness of pizzicato.

String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549863 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Classical,Concert,Instructional,Standards,World. Score and parts. 52 pages. Jmsgu3 #3557749. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549863). Beethoven Sonata Op. 49 No. 2 arranged for string orchestra. Duration: 10:15 Score: 28 pages, 242 measures. In two movements. I arranged this for my own beginner orchestra. Easy to rehearse and perform. Very popular with the audience. Sonata Op. 49 No. 2 Arranged from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 20, this is a simple but interesting work in two movements showing the composers sense of humor. The first movement Allegro ma non troppo and the second movement Tempo di Menuetto are both in the key of G. Both Sonatas 19 and 20 (op. 49, No. 1 & 2) are named Easy Sonatas because they are technically easier than the usual Beethoven Sonatas. This makes them very popular among students and teachers alike. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna the rest of his life. In his late 20s it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies therefore belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano. www.jamesguthrie.com.

Westleaf Edition #764511. Published by Westleaf Edition (A0.1164163). These Five Hungarian Folks Songs were transcribed and arranged from 78rpm records issued about 1915.Király ErnÅ‘ sings several as Old Folk Songs (“Régi Népdalokâ€), even though Megugrattak Hortobágyon A Karámból Egy Csikót was composed by Vajda József and remains an often recorded song. Megy A GÅ‘zös Lefelé on the Munkacsy recording was composed by Rózsa S. Lajos, but composers of the remaining songs are unidentified. The records were purchased by József Báthory in Manhattan in the early 20th century, and remained in the family until the 21st century. All the records were transferred to digital form in January 2013, with the original transfer stored in exact condition, after which they were passed on to historian David Neal Lewis for archiving. Allegretto quasi andante.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 6 of Beethoven's Op. 33 is a short Allegretto that is characterized by its playful and light-hearted nature. The piece is in the key of D major and is written in a binary form, consisting of two sections that are repeated. The first section is in a brisk andante tempo and features a playful melody that is accompanied by a simple, yet effective, harmonic progression. The second section is more subdued and features a more lyrical melody that is accompanied by a more complex harmonic progression. The piece is notable for its use of syncopation, which adds to its playful character. Overall, Bagatelle No. 6 is a charming and delightful piece that showcases Beethoven's skill as a composer of small-scale works.
