Sometimes the spirituals described the hardships of slavery (NobodyKnows the Trouble I've Seen). Most interestingly, some spirituals had hidden meanings. In Swing Low, SweetChariot it appears that the singer is talking about dying and going to heaven, but in actuality, home refers to aplace of freedom, and crossing the river Jordan means overcoming the obstacles to freedom.

When I heard the news about how gravely ill he was I thought to myself that so often we give thanks, honor, or show our love when it is too late. Who wants to be that person? I was finally in the unique position to show my gratitude and love to my parents in the most special way that I could - through music from my heart and soul. I got the courage to look deeply within and then I began to write what was to become the first and second songs, respectively Tears from My Eyes: Remember Your Feelings and Tears from My Eyes: Reflection and Contemplation on my Tears from My Eyes: Songs from my Soul album.You will now be able to do just the same for your loved ones with this new music. Your intermediate level to advanced students and even professional musicians should find this to be a welcomed piece to learn and master. It looks deceptively simple but the learning and challenge comes from two smaller sub-ensembles playing together in their own collective units legato con moto while playing together as a whole music ensemble Everyone will enjoy and bathe in the beautiful harmonies that will resonate when the entire music ensemble begins to listen to each while playing together as a group. Your musicians will hone their skills in playing together with just the right balance that this song requires. Your musicians will also hone their skills for subdividing and maintaining an inner beat that is in sync with your conducting because there is no percussion and the notes are freely flowing on and off the down beat yet not sounding heavily syncopated when performed. When will you know when you have achieved the right balance and flow of the music? You will know when, because you will hear it and feel it when it comes into place. He wanted a piece from me for his sixth grade orchestra.The piece is in two movements (an excellent introduction to multi movement compositions) with each of the two movements being progressive, meaning the second is a bit more difficult than the first. The first movement, River Song, is an original folk song with beautiful harmonies and melodies. This is a wonderful way to introduce minor key to your ensemble. The second movement, River Dance, is a rhythmic barn dance framing a lyrical chorale section. This movement is in the more comfortable key of B-flat and serves as an excellent introduction to syncopation.

Your students and audience will both have lots of fun, and this is really effective in recruitment concerts as well. The piece starts with some percussive stomps and slaps that sound great on stage and are instantly recognizable. The 6/8 meter may be a challenge if your students haven't played in that rhythmic space before, but the familiarity of the song will help. The song is squarely in D harmonic minor, and as such gives a good opportunity to practice F natural, B flat, and low C# fingerings. This piece is a blast and I know your students will enjoy playing it.

Dorian can also be a name for a person. In this composition, I have imagined Dorian to be the protagonist on a hero’s journey. The music creates a narrative of our main character Dorian growing up, going on a grand adventure, and finally returning home, enriched by so many experiences.
