Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original - listen to it with your students to help them feel the tricky spots. You need a strong bass laying down the harmonic foundation throughout for this to work, cello is not doubling. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a fun challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some fun techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. There is an optional cut to remove the bridge if the piece is too much/too long for your group. This piece is a blast to play and I hope your students enjoy it!

Published by John T Sarno (A0.904424). This is a fun piece for an intermediate-level string orchestra. It is the third arrangement of mine that is a mash-up of traditional Christmas carols. This arrangement features religious Christmas carols. Included are: Angles We Have Heard on High; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Away in a Manger; Cradle Song (Away in a Manger); Joy to the World; In the Bleak Midwinter. In different places in the piece, different string sections play different melodies at the same time. There is a triangle part to be played as a fun part. There is a Flute solo, but it can be played on any C instrument. More instructions are given at the end of the score for how these parts should be played. While it is mostly a pizzicato piece there are some bowing sections. It also gives the player a challenge to play pizzicato while holding the bow in certain sections. As with all Pick n' Mix arrangements, there are multiple part options to suit all playing levels- whether advanced players, complete beginners and all those in-between. The melodic interest of the Verses is passed between instrument sections and develops musically throughout the arrangement, whilst the catchy, repeated Chorus section provides a great hook for everyone to join together throughout the piece. The concept of all Pick 'n' Mix Strings arrangements is that you just choose the parts which are most suited to your players. We are absolutely NOT suggesting that you try to cover every single possible part! If you don't have any players on the more advanced parts, this doesn't matter at all. Alternatively, experienced ensembles might want all players on advanced parts. You may well use a mixture of some advanced parts and other simpler parts- or you could even have a very early beginner ensemble just using the parts for open strings and first fingers, with a teacher playing the main tune on piano for instance. In addition to the regular score and parts, there are also optional versions of each part with the: STRING FINGERING written in; LETTER NAMES written in; an EXTENSION SCORE; a REDUCED SCORE; an optional PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT and an optional PIANO REDUCTION. There are tried and tested suggested BOWINGS included in all string parts. However, should any music directors wish to use alternative bowings to those printed, we can happily provide versions of the score and parts without bowing on request. There are also Play Along videos available on YouTube @PicknMixStrings for all the Open String parts, in case these are helpful for practising along with!
