Sea chantey’s sometimes spelled shantey’s were songs that were played or sung aboard ships so men could work together doing the everyday tasks such as raising and lowering sails raising and lowering anchors, loading or unloading cargo. Ships had a “shanteyman†whose job it was to lead the men in song. There were often specific songs for each task. These wonderful melodies have found their way into the realm of folk songs today.

On 31 October 1517, Dr. Martin Luther, according to church custom,posted a document presenting 95 theses intended for scholarly debateon the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg. As a teacher, theologian,and a pastor he found much to be concerned with in the conduct of hismother, the Church. His intent was to begin a conversation over honestgrievances and to persuade those who would lead to take a path moreconsistent with the teachings they espoused.Spaces of Night takes its impetus from this desire to speak truth to power.It's music, with no small sympathy towards the tonal language and dialectof the classic American liturgical tradition, is at times parody and at othertimes anti-parody. Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public.In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it. This is a great way to feature a fantastic cellist while introducing the whole orchestra (and audience) to some accessible trends in contemporary music. The orchestra students were *very* excited and engaged with this piece, and the audience absolutely loved it.Compositional goals included:Accessible introduction to contemporary music.Fun and engaging parts for each section of the orchestraHighlight both cellist and orchestra with parts that sound difficult but are relatively simple.Clear-cut form and motivic material as a starting point for discussion of composition.Circles is 11:00 long, in 4 movements with no breaks.Mvt I. Circles begins high-energy and includes sweeping arpeggio figures and measured tremolo oscillations. The energy dissipates and a simple lyrical theme emerges, battling complications as they arise in the orchestra.Mvt II. Passacaglia is built over an exotic vamp and includes jete (to imitate castanets), col legno, snap pizz and instrument slaps. Mvt III. Lament begins with the soloist doing slow pizzicato arpeggiations while the orchestra bows weeping chords. Eventually, everyone is pizzicato, echoing and transforming the solo line. A cello cadenza recalls material from the Passacaglia. The soloist introduces triple-stop string crossings that lead into the fourth movement.Mvt IV. Coda is fast, with the triple stops in the solo part as a moto perpetuo, while the string sections come in one-by-one underneath. By the end, everyone is bowing and we circle back to the opening material of the 1st movement. The Soloist should be fluent through 3 octaves.Orchestra parts are easier and generally require fluency through 4th position. Written in 2011-12 and premiered by Eric with the Mountain View High School (Loveland, CO), Peter Toews conducting. Recording is of that premier. Eric can provide a MIDI if desired.Eric is happy to work with the orchestra and/or soloist via Skype (or a similar arrangement).

The cello and bass lines are fairly simple. Intermediate violin and viola players might find t some of the position work tricky but could be a great quick sight readable addition to a concert for an advanced intermediate or advanced ensemble.
