Found in several late-16th-century and early 17th-century sources and preserved at the University of Cambridge. Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the tune from as early as 1686. The tune is contained in several of Dowland’s lute manuscripts; in William Ballet’s Lute Book; in Sir John Hawkins’ transcripts of virginal music; in The Dancing Master; The Beggar’s Opera; and in many other books. The earliest known source of the tune -Trinity College, Dublin ms. D. I.21, c. 1580 - known as William Ballet's lute book- gives the tune in the melodic minor scale. Greensleeves is also often played in a natural minor scale and in the Dorian Mode. This arrangement is inspired on the transcripts of virginal music from Sir John Hawkins’. The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original - listen to it with your students to help them feel the tricky spots. You need a strong bass laying down the harmonic foundation throughout for this to work, cello is not doubling. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a fun challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some fun techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. There is an optional cut to remove the bridge if the piece is too much/too long for your group. This piece is a blast to play and I hope your students enjoy it!

Â The trip itself is an adventure since you will spend several days aboard the ship, and in days that have long since faded from the calendar, these trips took weeks and even months. This piece attempts to capture the spirit of the adventure and excitement of such a trip.The piece starts with the sounding of the horn as the ship embarks. Â This leads to a beautiful lyrical section and later there is a spritely gigue. Â Through these various sections I attempted to capture the various moods of the passengers during various stages of this long, exciting journey. Â ASCAP.

On the recording, the first 20 bars look like Yo-Yo Ma plays all the different voices with just his cello. In the arrangement that we present here, we have distributed the voices to the different instruments of the string orchestra (violins, viola and cello) and added the solo cello part.The string orchestra was written based on the recording. Students also develop some of the many skills involved in instrumental playing faster than other skills.The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series for Easy String Orchestra has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts).Each piece has a total of 5 different parts which are fully interchangeable between violins, violas and cellos (double basses can double the cello parts). So whether you have 15 violins and a viola, or 3 violins, or 4 cellos or whatever, the pieces will still work well together. All parts are provided for all instruments.Part 5 uses long notes on open strings. The other parts gradually increase in difficulty up to Part 1, which uses first and second positions. The teacher should select appropriate parts for the players in the group.I GOT THE BLUES is the second piece in this series, and uses typical Blues characteristics such as syncopation and swung quavers.
