It woulf fit in with a program of film music as well as with say, The Planets. The difficulty range would be between a 4-5. Two harps add that wonderful touch, like in works by Ravel. Though mostly tonal, the center section uses a more atonal canvas, again like a typical space adventure soundtrack. There are also Optional Percussion parts - Timpani, Drum Set, Glockenspiel, and Xylophone. A popular Christmas song, All Through the Night also appears in numerous films and stage productions, beginning with John Gay's opera of 1728 and up to the present day. Calon Lân (a pure heart), a traditional Celtic tune with lyrics later written by Daniel James (Gwyrosydd) in the 1890s, has become the anthem of the Welsh Rugby league. Llwyn Onn (The Ash Grove) was first published in 1892 in The Bardic Museum by harpist Edward Jones. In its English version, with words written by poet Thomas Oliphant, it is traditionally sung in America on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dafydd y Gareg Wen (David of the White Rock). This song was written by David Owen, a harpist who died about 1720 at the tender age of 29. Tradition says that Owen was lying on his deathbed, and called for his harp. Too weak to hold the harp, he was helped by his wife, who held the harp upright while he played this haunting tune. Rhyfelgyrch Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech) describes the seven-year siege of Harlech Castle between 1461 and 1468. Commanded by Constable Dafydd ap Ieuan, the Welsh garrison withstood the longest known siege in the history of the British Isles I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Published by Chicory Music (A0.734370). 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry The Old Rugged Cross has been a country gospel favorite ever since it became the title song of Ernest Tubb's 1952 gospel album; it has been performed by some of the twentieth century's most important recording artists, including Andy Griffith, Anne Murray, Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, John Berry, Floyd Cramer, George Jones, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Ricky Van Shelton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. The Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler Brothers, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, George Beverly Shea and John Prine on the 2007 CD Standard Songs for Average People with Mac Wiseman. British television dramatist Dennis Potter used the gospel song prominently in several of his plays, most notably Pennies from Heaven (1978); and the song also played a major part in Gridlock (2007), an episode of the long-running sci-fi drama series Doctor Who. In early 2009, the song was covered by Johnny Cash and June Carter, Kevin Max, Mahalia Jackson, Merle Haggard, and Patsy Cline. RhosymedreWelsh Folk Song Suite was written in 2011 for Wrexham Schools String Ensemble, though it is an enjoyable challenge for string groups of any age. The notes are mostly straightforward and the rhythms can be taught and learnt.The work is conveniently named, though only the inner movements could be described as a folk song. The first is taken from Edward Jones’s 1794 Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards, whilst the fourth is a famous hymn.Three of the movements share a modernist idiom without often straying from their melodic root. In the final movement ideas from the first two movements return. The slow movement, Cadair Idris, however, stands alone, with much more traditional harmonic roots, and is joined structurally by an original melody. Score and parts included.
