Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773302). If ever there was a nation with song in its heart, it is the Welsh. These five traditional Celtic folksongs are among the best known and best loved of all folk music. Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through The Night), first published in 1784 in Edward Jones's anthology of folk songs, Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards, became one of the most popular hymns in the English-speaking world. A popular Christmas song, All Through the Night also appears in numerous films and stage productions, beginning with John Gay's opera of 1728 and up to the present day. Calon Lân (a pure heart), a traditional Celtic tune with lyrics later written by Daniel James (Gwyrosydd) in the 1890s, has become the anthem of the Welsh Rugby league. Llwyn Onn (The Ash Grove) was first published in 1892 in The Bardic Museum by harpist Edward Jones. In its English version, with words written by poet Thomas Oliphant, it is traditionally sung in America on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dafydd y Gareg Wen (David of the White Rock). This song was written by David Owen, a harpist who died about 1720 at the tender age of 29. Tradition says that Owen was lying on his deathbed, and called for his harp. Too weak to hold the harp, he was helped by his wife, who held the harp upright while he played this haunting tune. Rhyfelgyrch Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech) describes the seven-year siege of Harlech Castle between 1461 and 1468. Commanded by Constable Dafydd ap Ieuan, the Welsh garrison withstood the longest known siege in the history of the British Isles I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. These Five Hungarian Folks Songs were transcribed and arranged from 78rpm records issued about 1915.Király ErnÅ‘ sings several as Old Folk Songs (“Régi Népdalokâ€), even though Megugrattak Hortobágyon A Karámból Egy Csikót was composed by Vajda József and remains an often recorded song. Megy A GÅ‘zös Lefelé on the Munkacsy recording was composed by Rózsa S. Lajos, but composers of the remaining songs are unidentified.The records were purchased by József Báthory in Manhattan in the early 20th century, and remained in the family until the 21st century. All the records were transferred to digital form in January 2013, with the original transfer stored in exact condition, after which they were passed on to historian David Neal Lewis for archiving. Files were restored from the digital transfers (rumble, clicks, pops removed as much as possible, noise reduction, and some remastering) and are available for download at:http://maltedmedia.com/people/bathory/hungarian.htmlSpecial thanks to composer Ãdám Kondor for translations of the Régi Népdalok texts, and to Dr. A. Latin.Commissioned by the American Music Research Center, Boulder, Colorado, Thomas Riis, director, in loving memory of Don Campbell. The work received its premiere performance at l’Église de la Sainte-Trinité, Paris, on October 24, 2013 by Alexis Galpérine, violin, Magali Léger, soprano, Saori Kikuchi, harp, and Carolyn Shuster Fournier, organist. The work consists of three Latin texts from the Requiem Mass. The first, Exaudi, is in “Larghetto†tempo and serves as a prelude. The second, Dies Iræ, marked “Allegro agitato,†is an intense and dark scherzo in D minor with chromatic runs in the organ and violin which accompany the soprano. A central, more lyrical section follows based on the “Lacrymosa†text in a slower tempo, leading to the song’s only serene moment: “Pie Jesu Domine.†The “Dies Irae†music returns, and the song ends violently and decisively. The third song, In Paradisum, introduces the harp. The soprano melody is modeled very closely on the Gregorian chant based on this text. A gentle climax occurs on the text “habeas eternam,†and the song slowly winds down to its end, having laid to rest life’s struggles in the eternity of heaven. Duration: 12:30.

This led to the inspiration of having the accompaniment to Eleanor Rigby played by a string octet when the song was recorded for the Beatles' 1966 album Revolver. It was a sharp break, both in the music and the words, from the current conventions of pop music, and proved to be a milestone in the Beatles transformation from a pop/rock stage act to the experimental, recording-oriented band of their later years.
