Key: D major.With this work, Pachelbel, who was born in Nuremberg, created one of the most popular orchestral pieces of the baroque period. In the canon two of the strictest contrapuntal forms are combined: The three violin parts form an extensive canon with entries of two bars distance. To this, a ground bass (basso ostinato) has been added repeating its two-bar tone formula 28 times. The technical mastery of the piece can be ad-mired just as much as its effect lies in the melodic and sensuous power of its string tones. The modest technical demands on the musicians are diametrically opposed to the compositional level: they do not go beyond the third position.

Key: D major.With this work, Pachelbel, who was born in Nuremberg, created one of the most popular orchestral pieces of the baroque period. In the canon two of the strictest contrapuntal forms are combined: The three violin parts form an extensive canon with entries of two bars distance. To this, a ground bass (basso ostinato) has been added repeating its two-bar tone formula 28 times. The technical mastery of the piece can be ad-mired just as much as its effect lies in the melodic and sensuous power of its string tones. The modest technical demands on the musicians are diametrically opposed to the compositional -level: They do not go beyond the third position.

These 2 Minuets and Air come from a collection of music called Minuets, etc., etc. for the Violin, Mandolin, German-Flute and Harpsichord (1770) by the British abolitionist, writer, shopkeeper, and composer Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780). They are arranged so that they can be performed as a work for String Orchestra or String Quartet. This is possible because the Cello and Bass parts are doubled. The Violin 3 part is optional and can serve two purposes: (1) To add more instruments to the viola section, if your orchestra has a small number of violists, to balance the parts in the ensemble, and (2) to provide more options for performing these pieces as a String Quartet. Possibilities include:2 Violins, Viola, Cello;   2 Violins, Viola, Bass;   3 Violins, Cello;   3 Violins, BassThis kind of flexibility of ensemble, along with the fact that every part gets to play something interesting, makes this an ideal arrangement for educators.Additionally, the Air was originally written as a trio. The Viola and Violin 3 parts were written by me, so that it can be performed with the 2 Minuets. This means, if you wanted to play the Air as a trio, you can, and it provides another option for how one can utilize this arrangement for chamber music. This fun little tune uses all sorts of variations of rhythms using groups of 2 and 4 eighth notes. The notes are easy, so students can concentrate on the rhythms. Although this is written for first year players, it would be fun to pull it out again in another year as a warm-up. The more advanced students could have fun seeing how quickly they can play it, while still being accurate with the rhythms. (Or how slowly they can play it while keeping the rhythms under control!) Included are a score and parts for violins 1 and 2, viola, cello, bass, and optional piano. Permission is granted to make as many copies of the parts as needed for your orchestra.

This is only the SCORE.  This piece is performed as a 2 part round. It begins in unison and then splits into the round when the song repeats. This way all students are playing together in unison before they experience the round.  All instrument parts can be bought separately and contain both lines of music. They can also all be combined for mixed groups/ larger ensembles. There is no string bass part (only violin, viola, cello).My beginner students needed a Halloween group ensemble piece appropriate for their level. So I made this arrangement of Frere Jacques in minor and named it Brother Skeleton. The arrangement was written in 2022.
