The original description is as follows: Cordolium, meaning heartfelt grief; sorrow of the heart, heartache. I wrote this piece with one of my favorite pieces in mind: Barber's Adagio for Strings. I wanted to challenge myself to convey emotion like Barber did, and to write a piece with a lot of emotional potential. Cordolium travels through the stages of grief, allowing the musicans to express denial, agitation, and depression, before it concludes with a dejected acceptance of all the sorrow that came before. I realized the original is too long especially for advanced HS groups so I decided to create this cut version to accomodate. This shortened version forced me to cut some transitions and some beautiful sections out, but it still contains the main motifs and allows all the expression in a shorter time. It also includes more bowing and a few more dynamics to help give student groups more directions. The original work can be found here: Cordolium

When I started writing this piece, I didn’t have a title in mind but as it developed, I began to think that it sounded like a mixture of different bird song in one place. The only thing I was sure about was, I wanted it to be minimalist in style with ideas morphing into each other and letting that process shape the music.  “The Menagerie†is written for String Orchestra and is around 8’ 25†in duration. From the initial one note pedal tone, the piece evolves providing melodic and rhythmic nuances which create the music and direction.

I was intrigued with the sounds and styles he was able to blend together for that album. Since my compositions are marketed for school-based ensembles, I wanted to try my hand at creating a piece that had a Middle-Eastern vibe, by using a harmonic minor mode. This piece is written in D-Phrygian Dominant mode (scale degrees are as follows: 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, b7). Look out for low 1, 2, and low 4 fingerings.

These 2 Minuets and Air come from a collection of music called Minuets, etc., etc. for the Violin, Mandolin, German-Flute and Harpsichord (1770) by the British abolitionist, writer, shopkeeper, and composer Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780). They are arranged so that they can be performed as a work for String Orchestra or String Quartet. This is possible because the Cello and Bass parts are doubled. The Violin 3 part is optional and can serve two purposes: (1) To add more instruments to the viola section, if your orchestra has a small number of violists, to balance the parts in the ensemble, and (2) to provide more options for performing these pieces as a String Quartet. Possibilities include:2 Violins, Viola, Cello;   2 Violins, Viola, Bass;   3 Violins, Cello;   3 Violins, BassThis kind of flexibility of ensemble, along with the fact that every part gets to play something interesting, makes this an ideal arrangement for educators.Additionally, the Air was originally written as a trio. The Viola and Violin 3 parts were written by me, so that it can be performed with the 2 Minuets. This means, if you wanted to play the Air as a trio, you can, and it provides another option for how one can utilize this arrangement for chamber music. I wanted to write a companion piece for Tiger Dancing, which was written for the choreographer Henri Oguike and his company. Although Eternity's Sunrise was written for the concert hall rather than the theatre, dance is a pervasive feature of the music, the ensemble plays almost throughout in rhythmic unison. The opening burst sets the stage for what follows and makes a short final return as a coda. The work last about sixteen minutes. Steve Martland. The work has a powerful impact on both players and audiences, it's high-voltage music requireing real stamina from the performers. Audences at the premiere and subsequent tour loved it and the work would make marvellous dance music. The title of this piece comes from lines by the visionary English poet William Blake: He who binds to himself a joy Does the winged life destroy; But he who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in eternity's sunrise. Incidentally, this poem was on Stockhausen's desk for most of his working life, and his death occurred as Steve was writing the piece.

Published by Graham Boag (A0.1305018). As a younger music student, I played Classical Guitar and always wanted to play this but for whatever reason I just could not master the tremolo effect needed. It has been arranged here for String Orchestra using various techniques to try and conjure up the famous tremolo effect, along other bowing techniques to add variety to this orchestration. A little information about the piece: Recuerdos de la Alhambra (Memories of the Alhambra) is a classical guitar piece composed in Málaga by Spanish composer and guitarist Francisco Tárrega It requires the tremolo technique and is often performed by advanced players.The piece was written for and dedicated to Tárrega's patron Concepción Gómez de Jacoby in 1899, commemorating their visit to the Alhambra palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain. It was originally titled Improvisación ¡A Granada! Cantiga Ãrabe. It became known through an early 20th-century publication edited by Tárrega and dedicated as an homage to the French guitarist Alfred Cottin.

He wanted a piece from me for his sixth grade orchestra.The piece is in two movements (an excellent introduction to multi movement compositions) with each of the two movements being progressive, meaning the second is a bit more difficult than the first. The first movement, River Song, is an original folk song with beautiful harmonies and melodies. This is a wonderful way to introduce minor key to your ensemble. The second movement, River Dance, is a rhythmic barn dance framing a lyrical chorale section. This movement is in the more comfortable key of B-flat and serves as an excellent introduction to syncopation.
