Each instrumentalist plays one and only one note throughout the entire piece. There are no expression markings – only dynamics. There are no special techniques. Each performer is “self-isolatingâ€. 2. 48 instrumentalists – 24 violins, 10 violas, 8 cellos, 6 double basses. The entire ensemble covers four chromatic octaves. 3. Vibrato consistent across all instrumentalists. 4. No liberty with rhythm. Follow exactly as written. 5. This may be considered an etude – a study of volume. All instrumentalists should be consistent in their interpretation of each dynamic. pppp should be extremely quiet but still audible. 6. The change in volume for crescendos and decrescendos should be gradual – reaching end dynamic in a legato, smooth manner. 7. He is most well known for his performance career as a classical crossover and popular music artist with 11 CD recordings, numerous awards and accolades, and performances with the likes of Luciano Pavorotti, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Baez. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing. Vivaldi's Concerto RV 93 was originally written for lute or guitar solo plus strings and basso continuo. Here, the 1st movement of the concerto has been arranged for an intermediate-level student string orchestra without continuo or piano accompaniment. To this end, the work has been simplified: the original key of D major has been changed to C major; some rhythms have been simplified, including doubling all note values and changing the time signature to 2/2; some registers have been changed in order to keep parts in 1st position; and extensive dynamics and articulations have been added to assist students with musical interpretation according to Baroque music conventions. That said, some crescendos have been added for effect. It is anticipated that the one repeat will be done, as is traditional. The upper strings are expected to be able to play low 2nd and 4th fingers, and the cellos have both backward and forward extensions but only leave 1st position in two short identical passages. The original description is as follows: Cordolium, meaning heartfelt grief; sorrow of the heart, heartache. I wrote this piece with one of my favorite pieces in mind: Barber's Adagio for Strings. I wanted to challenge myself to convey emotion like Barber did, and to write a piece with a lot of emotional potential. Cordolium travels through the stages of grief, allowing the musicans to express denial, agitation, and depression, before it concludes with a dejected acceptance of all the sorrow that came before. I realized the original is too long especially for advanced HS groups so I decided to create this cut version to accomodate. This shortened version forced me to cut some transitions and some beautiful sections out, but it still contains the main motifs and allows all the expression in a shorter time. The string parts are early intermediate level in difficulty, the solo trumpet part is intermediate level and requires good awareness of dynamics. This music is in binary form, the second section starts at the 24th measure after a brief bridge passage for the strings. The performance duration is two and a half minutes, the full score is four pages and all separate parts are attached.
