A note from the composer: I wrote Farewell Dream Garden for the International Music in the Garden Composers’ Competition Wroclaw - Kraków 2010/2011. The competition was sponsored by the Botanical Gardens of Wroclaw to commemorate the 200th anniversary of their founding. The guidelines of the competition suggested a musical portrayal of times of day in the garden and I chose to depict nighttime, or more specifically, dreaming. My idea of a night garden is deeply lyrical, emotional, and colorful. Broadly arching phrases of the soprano vocalise, ebbs and flows of the string orchestra, and intricate flute textures all compound to make Farewell one of my most romantic and spectacular compositions to date. The composition won the second prize in the competition. The work received its premiere performance at l’Église de la Sainte-Trinité, Paris, on October 24, 2013 by Alexis Galpérine, violin, Magali Léger, soprano, Saori Kikuchi, harp, and Carolyn Shuster Fournier, organist. The work consists of three Latin texts from the Requiem Mass. The first, Exaudi, is in “Larghetto†tempo and serves as a prelude. The second, Dies Iræ, marked “Allegro agitato,†is an intense and dark scherzo in D minor with chromatic runs in the organ and violin which accompany the soprano. A central, more lyrical section follows based on the “Lacrymosa†text in a slower tempo, leading to the song’s only serene moment: “Pie Jesu Domine.†The “Dies Irae†music returns, and the song ends violently and decisively. The third song, In Paradisum, introduces the harp. The soprano melody is modeled very closely on the Gregorian chant based on this text. A gentle climax occurs on the text “habeas eternam,†and the song slowly winds down to its end, having laid to rest life’s struggles in the eternity of heaven. Duration: 12:30.

It is always important to the native Passauer that his spiritual and secular works, which have received much attention in Germany and abroad, are singable and playable by ambitious lay people. This claim also fulfilled his 2007/08 Stabat Mater for solo soprano, four-part mixed choir and string orchestra. The work, which is based on the famous medieval sequence about the grieving mother of Jesus on the cross, consists of a total of seven orchestral parts. Both the three sections reserved for the solo soprano and the four choral parts are characterized by repetitive structures, striking rhythms and simple melodies, based on traditional, dissonance-enriched major-minor tonality. An impressive yet touching piece of sacred choral music that can be ideally integrated into concert programs and can also be well rehearsed by amateur choirs.

This transcription also makes it possible to perform with a voice or a solo instrument, and maintains lyricism and beauty, adding a new color.
