Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549838 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554481. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549838). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. &n.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869857). I met Deok Yong Kim as a member of the Nico Quartet at the New England Conservatory of Music, in Boston, Massachusetts. She is an amazing cellist, and she has recorded four of my works since 2019. Every time I hear her perform either in person or in the recordings I would exclaim, OMG!!! Claire!!! She calls herself Claire here in America. This is the second work I have written for her. The first was Trio 803 (2020) for clarinet, cello and piano. I am calling this one, a duo for cello and piano, Éclair, as a pun on her American name; plus I know Claire loves desserts!!! Additionally, every time when I exclaim OMG!!! Claire!!!, I feel like I have been struck by lightning. LOL!!! Éclair (2021) is in six movements. 1. Allegro, TRIO 2. Moderato, TRIO 3. Adagio 4. Allegro 5. Molto allegro, TRIO 6. Adagio Enjoy!

Score and part. 15 pages. Sharon Wilson #1032884. Published by Sharon Wilson (A0.1453671). This favorite contemporary hymn by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend is arranged as an instrumental duet (for Cello Solo with Piano Accompaniment). The beautiful, lyrical style of this instrumental piece creates a powerfully uplifting atmosphere and is an ideal selection for any church setting. For the first verse, the CELLO plays the melody. The PIANO plays the melody for the second verse and then concludes with the CELLO on the melody for the third verse. The PIANO has both right-hand and left-hand playing melody during the interludes. Three unique verses are included and if four verses are desired to match the lyrics, an optional repeat is included for the last verse. The first two verses are softer and more lyrical than the third verse. For the third and optional fourth verse, the PIANO transitions to a bolder, more powerful feel matching the intensity of the lyrics: Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! The audio sample begins in measure 5.The range for the CELLO is C3 to D4. All notes for the CELLO are playable in the first position making this piece an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players. The purchase price includes these printing options: 1. a grand staff (7 pages) with both parts on each page2. separate scores for the CELLO (2 pages) and PIANO (4 pages)This arrangement is also available for the following instrument combinations (all sold separately):Piano SoloFlute or Violin Solo with Piano accompanimentFlute and/or Violin duet with Piano accompanimentViolin and Cello duet with Piano accompanimentVisit Sharon Wilson's website: https://www.SharonWilsonMusic.com/Subscribe to her YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/@SharonWilsonMusicKeywords: praise music, worship service, meditation, devotion, devotional music, invitation, prelude, offertory, contemporary Gospel songs, communion, altar call, Getty Music, Keith and Kristyn Getty.

Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522284 Composed by Colin Kirkpatrick. Concert,Holiday,Love,Patriotic. Score and part. 25 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6538731. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522284). This collection follows on from the collection The Island of Dreams, also available from the same publisher. Return to the Island of Dreams consists of ten elementary cello pieces which are musical sketches of a magical island somewhere in South East Asia. The pieces can be performed entirely in first position. They are intended as supplementary material to your usual teaching materials. There’s plenty of contrasting music for the student recital or an end-of-semester concert. Also, these pieces could be used for sight-reading practice for intermediate students. Your cello students are sure to find these pieces enjoyable and challenging. Every piece has a short keyboard introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible. Dynamic markings are used from the start, and some articulations marks (notably staccato) are used. Several pieces have a few measures rest in the middle to give the player a break and add musical contrast and also to give experience of counting empty bars. The album consists of piano-cello score and a separate cello solo part both contained in a single PDF file. The audio sample contains the following pieces (1) Asian Dawn; (2) Skybird; (3) Ocean Song; (5) Dance of the Earth Spirits; (7) Call of the Homeland and (9) March of the Hill Children.

Cello,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1258663 Composed by P. F. Strohm. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. Score and part. 12 pages. Pete Strohm Music #851921. Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.1258663). Impromptu No. 4 Â for Violoncello and Piano is the fourth in a set of one-movement works from American composer P. F. Strohm. The first five of these impromptus are intended for skilled players, requiring great tone, technique and musicality from both performers. They are outstanding works for contest, concert or recital, either individually or as a set. The fourth impromptu is in basic ABA song form, with lush, flowing melodies for the cello and a piano part that creates a visual flow of its own with graceful arpeggios and hand-crossings. Those hand-crossings are in part to sustain the constant striking of a deep interval that echoes in the opening and closing sections. This impromptu conveys emotion and reflection, nowhere more evident than a brief call and response section at midpoint that implies an improvisation over a blues progression. Difficulty level is medium-advanced. Performance time is 5:45. Â Member, ASCAP.

Cello,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1252822 By Maria Thompson Corley. By Maria Thompson Corley. Arranged by Maria Thompson Corley. 21st Century,Sacred. Score and part. 9 pages. Maria Thompson Corley #846622. Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1252822). “Pax Aeternam†was written in memory of renowned composer Barbara York, a fellow Canadian whom I was blessed enough to meet in person through my interaction with Matt Brown. Though we connected many years into my collaborative piano career, Matt is the first tubist I ever worked with, and Barbara’s music was my favorite part of getting introduced to the tuba literature. I was thrilled to learn how much she appreciated my playing of her work.“How Beautiful†was written in memory of Matt’s son Eli, who had a congenital condition that took his life a few hours after he was born. This flawless piece of music, poignant yet never maudlin, provided the title for a recording Matt and I did of all of Barbara’s tuba output. It also threw down the gauntlet when Danny Rowland approached me, at Matt’s suggestion, about composing a piece. Danny mentioned loving “How Beautiful,†and intending to commission Barbara, who’d recently passed on. I’d never written for the tuba before, but felt absolutely no pressure. That’s a lie.Like “How Beautiful,†“Pax Aeternam†is in a major key; in my case, I wanted to evoke wistfulness rather than despair. Barbara’s path was full of suffering, and having lost a brother to prolonged illness, I’ve come to embrace the idea that death can be a sweet relief from pain. I tried to capture some of Barbara’s spirit, particularly in the middle section, and chose triple meter to give the outer sections a bit of “swing.†I don’t recall Barbara as a somber person, and I wanted to paint a portrait of someone who moved through life with a smile. I didn’t know her as well as many, but I always found her kind, generous, and unpretentious. I hope that this musical portrait does her justice.I created a cello transcription for a performance with Sara Male, my partner in Duo Chiaroscuro. This seemed appropriate, since “Still Waters Running Deep,†one of our signature pieces, is a transcription of the slow movement of Barbara’s bassoon sonata, created at our request by the composer.

Inspired by the stylings of the Baroque masters, this instrumental duet arrangement (for CELLO solo with PIANO accompaniment) weaves a classical sound throughout the familiar hymn tune FLEMMING. The lyrics typically associated with the tune were written by Elizabeth R. Charles and titled Praise Ye the Father. This bright and festive arrangement is equally fun for both performers as the piece creates a complex intertwining of patterns reminiscent of classical works. This arrangement includes two verses with the CELLO playing the melody throughout. All notes for the CELLO are playable in the first position making this arrangement an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players. The PIANO accompaniment is written for an intermediate player. The purchase price includes a 4-page combined score with both CELLO and PIANO parts on each page plus a separate 1-staff score for the CELLO solo (1 page).

DaCapo Primary Music #905173. Published by DaCapo Primary Music (A0.1316427). Brilliant solos for beginner cello with piano accompaniments. The tunes in this collection of concert pieces have been adapted from traditional folk and children’s songs and given a whole new lease of life with entertaining and imaginative piano accompaniments. There are two versions of each piece – one technically easier than the other. The keys are those needed for early graded exams and there is scope to extend the key ranges and explore octave displacements, varied articulation, slurrings, different fingerings etc. These possibilities are not always marked in the score as it is hoped that the teacher can encourage pupils to bring their own ideas to each piece. The imaginative and varied piano parts give the performer much more than just a chord structure as support for their playing and the accompanying CD can be used once they are able to play the pieces with ease.Designed to be the first concert pieces for a beginner to be played with a pianist or at home with the CD, giving the audience entertaining music to listen to whilst giving the player a real sense of a serious performance. In Concert is the final workings of songs that were commissioned to teach music to children systematically using relative solfa. The songs (all old English folk songs) were reworded to make for entertaining material for children whilst they learn the basic elements and skills of music making. The songs are contained in The First DaCapo Songbook and are brought together as a singing performance in The Farmyard Suite. In Concert is the instrumental version of this. You can find more DaCapo pieces for young instrumentalists at DaCapo Music Shop

Violin, cello and piano - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6972 Studies on the Cypriot Folk Song 'The Shepherd'. Composed by Enjott Schneider. This edition: score and parts. Folk song. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 11 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6972. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6972). 'Musica arcaica No.1' is the first piece in a series of chamber music works in which Schneider as a composer examines music of other cultures (songs, dances among others). The old Cypriot shepherd's song Voskos inspired the composer to apply the archaic composition techniques of drone, heterophony and ostinato. The song expresses different moods: The first half of the song is dominated by the yearning lament 'Im Pferch eingesperrt bin ich geboren, im Pferch werde ich sterben'. The second half sets the ecstatically and defiantly, but also proudly sustained thought of death 'Niemand von euch kennt den Tod, noch das Altern!' to music. Schneider presents these emotions in a convincing and exciting manner by means of instruments.

Cello,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549463 Composed by Aleksandr Scriabin (1871 - 1915). Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3499715. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549463). Score: 8 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 2 pages. Duration: 3:10. An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores. Background First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys. Synesthesia He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors.  Multimedia Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533690). Paradoxes: Sonata for Cello and Piano (1998) was written as a commission frommusicologist and cellist Larry KludgeThe conception and inspiration of this sonata had the idea of paradoxes behind it. Ouruniverse is certainly full of these paradoxes, and they range from the most practical in natureto the most highly philosophical in nature. Each of the movements in this work isparadoxical in a variety of musical ways. The movement titles present the foundation ideasfor each movement, stillness, brevity, and movement; however, those serve as only thebeginning for the paradoxes in the work. The first movement, Paradox of Stillness, openswith a statement of the main melodic theme for the work. The melody and pitches of thattheme are used in a variety of ways throughout. The second section serves as a contrast to theopening after which the opening section is recalled again for the close. The brief secondmovement, Paradox of Brevity, is a very fast moving movement for the cello and the piano.Driving rhythms and odd harmonic twists pervade the movement. The final movement,Paradox of Movement, opens with and sustains a moto perpetuo dance for almost the entiremovement with a break in the middle for a brief cadenza for the solo cello. A brief codabrings the movement to a close

Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548673 Composed by Adam. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. Score and part. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #3410433. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548673). Cantique de Noël The French composer Adolphe Adam was already famous as a composer of many successful ballets and operas. Then, in the 1840s, he wrote his most famous work - O Holy Night. The original song title was Minuit Chretiens or Cantique de Noël.  Placide Cappeau provided the original song lyrics. The song was first performed in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey at midnight mass in 1847. It became very popular among the French, much like Silent Night was famous elsewhere. In 1850, John S. Dwight, a Unitarian minister and music teacher, translated the song into English.  Adolphe Adam Adam studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire in his younger years. He also played the timpani in the Conservatoire orchestra. Adam used his savings and borrowed money to open a new opera house - the fourth opera house in Paris in 1847. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1848 forced him to close. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1849 until he died in 1856. Placide Cappeau The poet Cappeau was an advocate of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire. Voltaire was renowned for criticizing the Catholic church, religious intolerance, and dogma in general. Consequently, Cappeau made the Redeemer figure in his song a kind of reformer of injustices, particularly the problem of original sin. To begin with, people recognized Cappeau's theology as eccentric, probably even doubtful. Theology In the earlier form of Minuit, the Christ figure descends to intervene with His Father's plan to punish humanity. Traditional doctrine pronounces that Christ came from love, not to intervene. This version also declares that Christ appeared to delete the original sin of Adam. Cappeau removed this part from his poem years later because he didn't believe it. He preferred to portray Christ as the reformer of disparity and unfairness. Before long, the writer/politician Alphonse de Lamartine called the Minuit the Marseillaise of religion. Most French churchmen agreed with this idea but did not consider it a tribute.  Â

Cello,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548509 Composed by Wade. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3388103. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548509). O Come All Ye Faithful arranged with new harmony for the final verse. Score: 3 pages, part: 1 page. O Come, All Ye Faithful O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it, but one theory is that it was originally composed by King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) and revised by John F. Wade and John Reading. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. The oldest manuscript from 1751, is owned by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Lyrics The English translation O Come, All Ye Faithful was certainly written by Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841. This translation is the most common in English speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Often, various verses are omitted because otherwise, the song is just too long. Some believe the first Latin lyrics were written by St. Bonaventure (13th century) or King John IV of Portugal in the 17th. Though others think it was written by the Cistercian monks. King John IV King John IV of Portugal was called The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he was also a composer and music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the library was ruined in 1755 because of the massive earthquake of Lisbon. In addition to his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context As mentioned above, verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Similarly, other verses are used according to whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522291 Composed by G F Handel. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Baroque,Easter,Holiday. Score and part. 6 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6632869. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522291). This piece is probably Handel’s best-known melody, although it began life as an operatic aria. The opera was called Xerxes, sometimes written Serses and pronounced something like “ZERT-seesâ€. It was commissioned by The King’s Theater in London and composed by Handel (who had become naturalized British and lived in London at the time) around 1737 and 1738. The opera is loosely based on the historical figure King Xerxes, who ruled from around 522-486 BC and was the fourth king of the Achaemenid Empire, a vast region that covered most of the present-day Middle East. The melody is often known simply as Handel’s Largo (despite being marked “Larghetto†in the musical score) and is the opening aria in the opera. The aria, known by its opening line Ombra mai fu is sung by Xerxes to a plane tree: “Tender and beautiful fronds of my beloved plane tree, let fate smile upon you...†Although this lovely melody has survived over the years, the opera itself was a complete failure when it was first performed in London in 1738. This arrangement is in G major and the cello part is written in the bass clef throughout. The top note is the G above the bass clef (G4) and the piece generally requires the use of long and sustained bowing (indicted in the score), though the cello fingering has been omitted. The piano part has been kept as simple as possible. Being so well-known, this piece would make a popular encore number for a cello recital.

Cello,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755018 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 36 pages. Sy Brandon #3243597. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755018). Grass Roots was composed during 2009-2010 for tuba and piano and adapted for cello and piano by the composer in 2016. The inspiration for this composition was Ken Burn’s series on America’s National Parks. The composer was not only inspired by the beauty and grandeur of the parks, but also by the vision of a few people that turned into the reality, therefore the title of this composition. The first movement is called A Voice in the Wilderness and represents the voice of John Muir, who recognized the beauty of Yosemite and made an effort to preserve it for future generations. The lyrical sections reflect the beauty of the area and the chromaticism reflects the uncertainty of his efforts. Conflicts is the title of the second movement as it represents the opposing forces in the debate to create a national park system. Lively rhythm and counterpoint are used throughout the movement to express the opposing points of view and the heated arguments. The last movement, Manifestations is the realization of the dream of a national park system. The movement is lyrical and flowing and is designed to be both serene and awe-inspiring.
