Musikalisch bietet die Gavotte die Möglichkeit, unterschiedliche Charaktere darzustellen: Es gilt, leichte „luftige“ Motive, breite energiegeladene Akkorde, aber auch schnelle virtuose Passagen zu gestalten. Der Klavierpart ist schlicht gesetzt und beschränkt sich weitgehend auf eine unterstützende Begleitfunktion. English • German.Belgian composer and cellist Louis Jean Marie Baerwolf (Barwolf) was born in Bruges in 1841 (his exact date of birth is unknown) and died in Brussels on 12.1.1899. He first studied violin, cello and piano at the Conservatoire in Liège – and also played the organ in his native Bruges. From 1862 he studied at the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels. After completing his studies, he was employed for many years at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where his brother Jean worked as a conductor; from 1889-1898 he worked as librarian at that theatre. Baerwolf composed primarily church music, including a Requiem, several masses and motets; he also wrote songs, chamber music and a Cello Concerto op. 48. Two of his compositions for cello and piano were published by Schott: a Mouvement perpétuel op. 66 and our choice, the melodic Morceau de Salon op. 54, which makes a good encore piece. It was published by Schott in 1873 as plate no. 20831.

English • German.Adrien-Francois Servais was born on 6.6.1807 in Halle, Belgium and died there on 26.11.1866. From 1829 Servais taught cello in Brussels, where from 1848 he was a professor at the Conservatoire royal de musique. Concert tours across Europe earned him a high reputation as a virtuoso performer: he was described by Berlioz as the ‘Paganini of the cello’. The piano accompaniment is by the Belgian pianist Jacques Mathieu Joseph Gregoir (Grégoir), who was born in Antwerp on 19.1.1817 and died in Brussels on 29.10.1876. He studied with Henri Herz and Christian Rummel, both of whom worked with Schott as composers. Gregoir was a successful piano virtuoso and published several piano works with Schott. English • German.Cellist, conductor and composer Georg Goltermann, born in Hannover on 19.8.1824, died in Frankfurt (Main) on 29.12.1898, had cello lessons with the principal cellist of the royal court orchestra in Hanover, August Christian Prell (1805-1885), a pupil of Bernhard Romberg. From 1847-49 he continued his studies in Munich with the celebrated cellist Joseph Menter and studied composition with Ignaz Lachner, Director of Music at the court in Munich. Goltermann undertook numerous concert tours as a cellist; from 1853 he was Assistant Director of Music at the municipal theatre in Frankfurt am Main, becoming Director of Music from 1854. He wrote numerous pieces for cello and had a particular gift for the Romantic character piece, composing lyrical pieces with titles such as Ballade, Elegie, Song Without Words and various dances. As his compositions are generally not too demanding, they are well liked by amateur musicians and frequently used for tuition purposes. This Mazurka comes from the set of Trois morceaux caractéristiques op. 41, published by Schott in 1864 (plate no. 17419).

His first cello lessons were with his father in Leuven, then from 1856 to 1858 he studied with Adrien Francois Servais in Brussels. Immediately after completing his studies he embarked on a very successful concert tour across Denmark, Sweden and Germany. He then found employment in Düsseldorf, Weimar – and Berlin, where he was Director of Music at court and teacher at the Academy of Music. In Vienna he was then appointed principal cellist at the Imperial Opera and professor at the Vienna Conservatoire. In 1888 de Sweet returned to Belgium, where besides teaching at Conservatoires in Ghent and Bruges he also worked as a conductor. Despite his busy concert schedule and teaching commitments, Jules de Swert still found time for composition. Alongside original pieces for cello and piano as well as transcriptions (particularly of works by Chopin) he composed two cello concertos, several orchestral works and operas. This transcription of Chopin’s Valse in E minor was published in 1876 (plate no. 22003).

English • German.Auguste Joseph Franchomme was born in Lille on 10.4.1808; he died in Paris in 1884. One of his first cello teachers in Lille was Pierre Baumann, who also taught Edouard Lalo. Giving up the study of Law in favour of the cello, he studied with Jean-Henri Levasseur and Louis-Pierre Norblin from 1825 at the Paris Conservatoire. After that he played in various orchestras until he was eventually able to establish himself as a soloist and chamber musician in Paris. Together with violinist Jean-Delphin Alard he founded the Alard Quartet, one of the few string quartets of the time whose members were all professional musicians. Alongside his concert career, Franchomme was a popular and successful professor at the Conservatoire for almost forty years. His compositions include numerous pieces and studies for the cello, a cello concerto and many transcriptions. Franchomme was a close friend of Chopin: he also composed the cello part to Chopin’s Duo concertante and reworked the cello part for the Polonaise Brillante. Chopin dedicated his Cello Sonata op. 65 to Franchomme. Chopin’s influence is clearly recognisable in Franchomme’s work and particularly evident, for example, in his Étude in C# minor op. 35/11. In 1884 Franchomme was awarded the Légion d’honneur for his services to music. This Fantaisie based on themes from Mozart’s Magic Flute was published in 1873 (plate no. 20425).

From 1859-98 he was principal cellist at the famous ‘Popular Concerts’ held on Saturdays and Mondays in London, while also teaching at the Royal Academy of Music. His Capricci op. 25 are among the most frequently used cello studies to this day. Piatti published various character pieces and arrangements with Schott, as well as four Sonatas for cello and piano. This Siciliana was published in 1869 as plate no. 16396.

This arrangement adapted for violoncello and piano was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, that is, inspiring and significant to the already known choral symphony by Beethoven, indicated to be performed by young music students, who want to enter the symphonic music, moreover, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change in key, so that it is comfortable for all instruments in the formation, thus maintaining the essence of the striking melody, as well as using it for ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions.Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Op. 125 incorporates part of the poem An die Freude (To Joy), a hymn written by Friedrich Schiller, with the text sung by soloists and a choir in its last movement. It was the first example of a major composer using the human voice as prominently as the instruments in a symphony, thus creating a far-reaching work that set the tone for the symphonic form that was to be adopted by Romantic composers. This is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. The choral symphony, better known as the Ninth Symphony or The Ninth, is one of the best known works in the Western repertoire, considered both an icon and predecessor of Romantic music, and one of Beethoven's great masterpieces, where it was first performed on May 7, 1824, the same year it was completed, at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna, Austria. The conductor was Michael Umlauf, the theater's music director, and Beethoven - dissuaded from conducting by the advanced stage of his deafness - was given a special place on the stage next to the conductor. It was later rearranged by Herbert von Karajan to become the anthem of the European Union in 1972, the national anthem of Rhodesia from 1974 until 1979, Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia, used the tune Ode to Joy.

He is often referred to as J. B. Foerster, and his surname is sometimes spelled Förster.-Life-Foerster was born in Prague. His ancestors were of Bohemian German ethnicity, but had assimilated into the Czech community. The family normally lived in Prague and was musical. His father, a composer also named Josef Foerster, taught at the Conservatory. (His father's students included Franz Lehár.) His brother was artist Viktor Foerster. Josef was educated accordingly, and duly studied there.-Style-Foerster produced numerous compositions. His music is not nationalistic in the sense of employing the idioms of Czech folk music.
