In 1983, my friend and colleague Arnt Martin made me read and listen to a most interesting piece of music for soprano, viola d'amore and strings, this work called my attention to the viola d'amore. In the following year, I became more and more absorbed in the possibilities this instrument offers and in 1985 decided to write a morceau d'ensemble including a viola d'amore. Thus birth was given to Mysterion, a composition for which these five musicians seem tailormade. As to content, Mysterion represents a reflection on death. Sketches of Christ Movement 3 Though I Was Blind; Now I SeeTone Poem for Cello and Piano and Piano by Stephen R Dalrymplebased on John 9, the account of the interactions of the man born blind, Jewish authorities, and Jesus Christtranscribed for solo flute, clarinet, trumpet, euphonium/trombone, and violin Sketches of Christ is a 3 movement work by Stephen R Dalrymple intended for the concert stage (contrasted with preludes and offertories at church). It was originally titled Sonata for Cello and Piano. As I composed similar works, I realized that, although I have used the concepts of sonata form in various movements, because these pieces reflect the drama of selected passages of the Bible, Tone Poem was a more fitting genre title. I have begun the process of transcribing these Tone Poems for additional instruments. I consider these Tone Poems as contemporary classical music. I have used modal harmonies; polychords and polytonality; free dissonance; atonality, mixed meters, etc. to convey the drama of the Bible. Sketches of Christ is based on 3 episodes from Christ’s Life: The calming of the Sea of Galilee, Mary and Martha, and the healing of the man born blind. This score is movement 3 of a 3 movement tone poem, originally scored and premiered as a sonata for Cello and Violin. It is presented here for 5 additional solo instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or Trombone) and Violin.  Sketches of Christ is written in 20th Century Classical Music composition techniques. Various movements employ a mix of bitonality, modal harmony, deliberate dissonance, and mixed meter. Each movement dramatizes an event form the Life of Christ. This movement expresses the interactions of the man born blind, Jewish authorities, and Jesus Christ from John 9.  The score shows the parts for cello and piano, but individual parts are provided for the other solo instruments.  Includes 14 scores: Full Score for cello and piano letter size; Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or trombone), and Violin solo parts; Full Score for cello and small page format for performing from a 10 inch tablet and the same solo parts for 10 inch tablet. tablet (Tell your computer which pages you want to print. There are programs online that will allow you to split pdf files so that you can choose the correct part of the pdf for your tablet.)  The 3 movements of the tone poem are published separately. My fascination with the culture of the Navajo Native Americans and their healing ceremonies based on harmony and beauty motivated me to listen to ethnographic recordings of their songs, which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. A number of these songs inspired me to create two works for different instrumental ensembles for students at the Conservatoire de Versailles. Both pieces represent miniature versions of ceremonial events. Thierry PécouThierry Pécou's interest in ethnomusicology is reflected in this piece. He was inspired by the culture and especially by the traditional healing ceremonies of the Navajo Native Americans which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. Pécou composed his miniature version of this ceremonial event for the students of the Conservatoire de Versailles. The piece is also available as a version for flauto traverse and treble recorder.

Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889878). The original version for cello and piano was my first formal composition when I started composing in 1998. When my brother, Ralph, heard it, he cried and said that he wished that my parents could have heard it, too. The form and harmonies of this piece are mostly traditional, but there are a few surprises. There is a cantorial cello cadenza. A trumpet and tuba are added to the usual chamber orchestra with piano, just to play an Oh My Darling Clementine counter-melody in one variation but flute and bassoon have cues and can do this nicely. The recording of the beautifully expressive performance by Ken Hoppe and the College of Marin Symphony conducted by Tara Flandreau (who edited the string parts) is of such poor sound quality that I have uploaded the computer playback as the sound clip, which is of course quite mechanical sounding. Schott Music - Digital #Q6536. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6536). Datura was commissioned by Accessible Contemporary Music and was written in a unique way. I composed the piece in installments over the summer of 2006 and emailed them to Seth Boustead who forwarded them on to the ensemble. In this unique way of working I was able to have time between each installment to think about what would come next and to get feedback from the performers about the music. This is a very new and different way for a composer to work. Usually I write the piece in solitude and then hand it to the performers but writing in installments allows more communications between the performers and the composer and allows the audience to hear the piece as its created. Datura is another series of pieces composer written about Asian plants and flowers. Datura is a very common houseplant in south China and very beautiful but it can also be used as a hallucinogen, usually with unpleasant results. In this piece the composer juxtaposed the other beauty of the plant with the intense inner would it can create by using alternately tranquil and intense musical passages. (Xiaogang Ye).

Oliveira is also a member of the group of composers Vox Novus, based in New York.To commemorate 15 years of activity as a composer, Oliveira released a box set with 4 CDs, as well as a CD with composer Mark Hagerty, and produced the series QUINZE, with 13 concerts including his works, between July and October of 2012.
