Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889878). The original version for cello and piano was my first formal composition when I started composing in 1998. When my brother, Ralph, heard it, he cried and said that he wished that my parents could have heard it, too. The form and harmonies of this piece are mostly traditional, but there are a few surprises. There is a cantorial cello cadenza. A trumpet and tuba are added to the usual chamber orchestra with piano, just to play an Oh My Darling Clementine counter-melody in one variation but flute and bassoon have cues and can do this nicely. The recording of the beautifully expressive performance by Ken Hoppe and the College of Marin Symphony conducted by Tara Flandreau (who edited the string parts) is of such poor sound quality that I have uploaded the computer playback as the sound clip, which is of course quite mechanical sounding. Published by Brian Strohmetz (A0.1280306). Around the Bend is a journey of tranquility, adventure, and discovery down a section of the Monocacy Creek in Bethlehem, PA. The first section of the music that appears throughout the piece is a simple melody that is reminiscent of a simple art song. It represents the river flowing along peacefully on a beautiful day. Occasionally, we come across an area where the water hits a small obstacle that causes the water to change its path and speed. We hear this as violent 16th note interruptions in the music. The river then returns to its natural flow and pace. Further along we encounter a small waterfall area with rapids and obstacles. The music cascades and has a rhythmic drive representing the rapids and the swift moving waters. After we have traversed the rapids, we return to the calm waters of the river as it continuously flows peacefully. The next portion of our journey is inspired by a specific and unique section of the Monocacy, where we find the hidden ivy. Trees surround the creek. When looking into them, at a certain angle, you will find a tree covered in ivy hidden amongst the other trees. When we reach this point in our journey, the music starts off mysteriously as though looking through the trees. When we find the hidden ivy, we are greeted by a majestic melody that reflects this hidden beauty. The piano plays a rising arpeggio repeatedly, reflecting the ivy’s goal to grow higher and closer to the sky. Once we pass the ivy, we return to the peacefully flowing river. We approach a bend in the river that we cannot see beyond. There is a bit of trepidation, but as we start to go around the bend, everything ends peacefully, and we know everything will be fine. The river will keep moving and we will survive. For Cello & Piano.

One of his most popular and widely recognized works, it is the only movement from the Carnival Suite that Saint-Saëns permitted to be performed publicly during his lifetime. This is an excellent recital encore to demonstrate melodic playing and strategic phrasing. The Carnival of the AnimalsThe Carnival of the Animals is an entertaining musical suite of fourteen movements by Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was composed for private performance by an ensemble of two pianos and solo instruments. The Swan (No. 13) is among the fourteen most famous movements. In its entirety, it lasts about 25 minutes. Saint-Saëns BackgroundCharles-Camille Saint-Saëns 1835 – 1921) was, by all means, in particular, a famous French composer, brilliant organist, and significant musical mastermind of the Romantic era. Indeed, his most famous compositions, in the long run, include his Piano Concerto No. 2 (1868), Cello Concerto No. 1 (1872), and the Danse macabre (1874). Notwithstanding, we must also add Violin Concerto No. 3 (1880), Symphony No. 3 (the Organ Symphony, 1886), and, it must be remembered, Carnival of the Animals (1886) to the list. ChildhoodIt is essential to realize that Saint-Saëns was undoubtedly, in fact, a child musical prodigy. Consequently, with this in mind, he made his concert debut, albeit at ten years old. Another critical point to remember is that he expressly studied at the Paris Conservatoire, then, despite reality, conversely followed a traditional career path as a church organist. Nevertheless, twenty years later, on the other hand, he left to become a successful freelance pianist and composer despite, as has been noted, his former employment situation. Furthermore, his performances were, after all, markedly in demand - not only in Europe but, above all, in the Americas all in all as well. YouthA point often overlooked is that in his youth, Saint-Saëns was undoubtedly excited about the modern music of the day. He was, in essence, fond of the music of his contemporaries, particularly Schumann, Liszt, and, for the most part, Wagner. In contrast, however, his compositions seemed, in fact, primarily confined within the conservative classical tradition. Be that as it may, he was, at the same time, nevertheless, a scholar of musical history.CriticismOn the whole, his conservatism, in fact, ultimately brought him into frequent conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and, in particular, the dodecaphonic schools of musical thought. A point often overlooked is that he included neoclassical elements in his music, contrary to some critics. Furthermore, in so doing, he provided the most compelling evidence that he predicted the techniques and works by Stravinsky and Les Six. To put it another way, given these points, he was regarded, perhaps for the most part unfairly, as a non-progressive reactionary henceforth around the time of his passing. LegacySaint-Saëns taught briefly in Paris, where his students included Gabriel Fauré. Maurice Ravel later studied with Fauré. In conclusion, both Ravel and Fauré were powerfully influenced by Saint-Saëns, whom they respected as a musical mastermind.

Poignant imagery passes through our minds; childhood Thanksgiving memories, memories of loved ones gone and reflections upon loved ones still with us.Winter is coming. There is so much to do, so much to prepare for. And yet for now…it is time to pause. To reflect. To rejoice in quiet jubilation.Although this composition is not unusually challenging for the cellist nor the pianist, it is my intent that it sets a mood, an ambience of introspective gratitude and joy. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

It was originally titled Sonata for Cello and Piano. As I composed similar works, I realized that, although I have used the concepts of sonata form in various movements, because these pieces reflect the drama of selected passages of the Bible, Tone Poem was a more fitting genre title. I have begun the process of transcribing these Tone Poems for additional instruments. I consider these Tone Poems as contemporary classical music. I have used modal harmonies; polychords and polytonality; free dissonance; atonality, mixed meters, etc. to convey the drama of the Bible. Sketches of Christ is based on 3 episodes from Christ’s Life: The calming of the Sea of Galilee, Mary and Martha, and the healing of the man born blind. This score is movement 3 of a 3 movement tone poem, originally scored and premiered as a sonata for Cello and Violin. It is presented here for 5 additional solo instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or Trombone) and Violin.  Sketches of Christ is written in 20th Century Classical Music composition techniques. Various movements employ a mix of bitonality, modal harmony, deliberate dissonance, and mixed meter. Each movement dramatizes an event form the Life of Christ. This movement expresses the interactions of the man born blind, Jewish authorities, and Jesus Christ from John 9.  The score shows the parts for cello and piano, but individual parts are provided for the other solo instruments.  Includes 14 scores: Full Score for cello and piano letter size; Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or trombone), and Violin solo parts; Full Score for cello and small page format for performing from a 10 inch tablet and the same solo parts for 10 inch tablet. tablet (Tell your computer which pages you want to print. I composed the piece in installments over the summer of 2006 and emailed them to Seth Boustead who forwarded them on to the ensemble. In this unique way of working I was able to have time between each installment to think about what would come next and to get feedback from the performers about the music. This is a very new and different way for a composer to work. Usually I write the piece in solitude and then hand it to the performers but writing in installments allows more communications between the performers and the composer and allows the audience to hear the piece as its created. Datura is another series of pieces composer written about Asian plants and flowers. Datura is a very common houseplant in south China and very beautiful but it can also be used as a hallucinogen, usually with unpleasant results. In this piece the composer juxtaposed the other beauty of the plant with the intense inner would it can create by using alternately tranquil and intense musical passages. (Xiaogang Ye).

It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). Key: F major.The Cello Sonata Op. 6 was composed over an apparently frequently interrupted period of three years, an extraordinarily long time for Strauss’s early creative phase. The compositional process spawned two independent versions of the work, the first of which is published for the first time on the basis of the text in the Critical Edition of the Works of Richard Strauss in the current edition as a practical musical text. The genesis of the two versions and the reasons for revision can only be reconstructed in part: only one of the surviving autographs bears a date and the second version only survives in printed form. What is more, Strauss did not communicate in greater detail on this composition in correspondence with his family and friends. There are enormous differences between the two versions of the Sonata: Strauss deleted the entire second and third movements Larghetto and Allegro vivace, replacing them with a newly composed Andante and Finale. In the first movement, Allegro con brio, Strauss retained the thematic-motivic material and compositionally complex passages such as the three-voice fugue in the development section (from bar 241 in the first version and bar 275 in the second version) almost intact in the new version of the sonata, but also undertook extensive alterations, particularly in the structure of the piano part, the motivic-thematic development of the movement and its harmony which became far more ambitious.12 Particular attention should be drawn to the repetitive accompaniment of the con espressione theme beginning in bar 32 and the significantly shorter development in the first version. The current printed edition of the first version of Richard Strauss’s Cello Sonata now makes it possible to follow Strauss’s compositional development during this period. The significance of the differences between the versions also mean that two sonata compositions for violoncello and piano by Richard Strauss with fundamental disparities in their underlying character are now available for performance. Though we connected many years into my collaborative piano career, Matt is the first tubist I ever worked with, and Barbara’s music was my favorite part of getting introduced to the tuba literature. I was thrilled to learn how much she appreciated my playing of her work.“How Beautiful†was written in memory of Matt’s son Eli, who had a congenital condition that took his life a few hours after he was born. This flawless piece of music, poignant yet never maudlin, provided the title for a recording Matt and I did of all of Barbara’s tuba output. It also threw down the gauntlet when Danny Rowland approached me, at Matt’s suggestion, about composing a piece. Danny mentioned loving “How Beautiful,†and intending to commission Barbara, who’d recently passed on. I’d never written for the tuba before, but felt absolutely no pressure. That’s a lie.Like “How Beautiful,†“Pax Aeternam†is in a major key; in my case, I wanted to evoke wistfulness rather than despair. Barbara’s path was full of suffering, and having lost a brother to prolonged illness, I’ve come to embrace the idea that death can be a sweet relief from pain. I tried to capture some of Barbara’s spirit, particularly in the middle section, and chose triple meter to give the outer sections a bit of “swing.†I don’t recall Barbara as a somber person, and I wanted to paint a portrait of someone who moved through life with a smile. I didn’t know her as well as many, but I always found her kind, generous, and unpretentious. I hope that this musical portrait does her justice.I created a cello transcription for a performance with Sara Male, my partner in Duo Chiaroscuro. This seemed appropriate, since “Still Waters Running Deep,†one of our signature pieces, is a transcription of the slow movement of Barbara’s bassoon sonata, created at our request by the composer.
