Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris.After the death of her mother, Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarried with an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studies privately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns, who remember their first meeting: “I was 12 when I heard the vicomtesse de Grandval for the first time, who was 18. It was at a musical morning concert at the home of the violinist de Cuvillon. She sang a song of her own composition ‚La Source, in which she accompanied herself. I was struck by the fluidity of her playing, which purely and without useless inflections, was quite close to my way of viewing music. This unified and tranquil style came out of her studies with Chopin.” Camille Saint-Saëns: Quelques mots sur l’exécution des œuvres de Chopin, in: “Le courrier musical de Paris” 13 [1910], S. 386). At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chiefly known today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.

And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year.This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring.And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. Kompositorisch hat dies für Jost nicht nur die Möglichkeit geschaffen, eine Geschichte hinter der Geschichte zu erzählen, sondern auch jedes einzelen Wort in Klänge einzuschweißen, deren Richtung er bestimmt. Folgerichtig ist demnach im Text und nicht an ihm entlang komponiert worden. Was bedeutet: der ohnehin zerschnittenen Sprache wurde eine weitere Ebene hinzugefügt, indem die jeweiligen Textschwerpunkte in verschiedene Klangbilder gefasst wurden, deren Summe dann die Dramaturgie des Ganzen bestimmt hat. Dadurch haben sich größere atmosplärische Unterschiede und Spannungen ergeben, als das sehr lyrische Gedicht vermuten ließe. So aber konnte der Komponist eine Dichte an Ausdruck und Intensität entwickeln, die bereits im Text enthalten sind, auch wenn er sich in ein lyrisches Gewand verkleidet hat.

The version then published was merely a substantially revised version which had been transposed to D major. Our new edition reconstructs the work's original state (in A major), taking the common performance practice principles of articulation and dynamics into account. A rewarding, yet fairly easy piece suitable for lessons and concerts which can be regarded as an important link to Beethoven's sonatas.

He is often referred to as J. B. Foerster, and his surname is sometimes spelled Förster.-Life-Foerster was born in Prague. His ancestors were of Bohemian German ethnicity, but had assimilated into the Czech community. The family normally lived in Prague and was musical. His father, a composer also named Josef Foerster, taught at the Conservatory. (His father's students included Franz Lehár.) His brother was artist Viktor Foerster. Josef was educated accordingly, and duly studied there.-Style-Foerster produced numerous compositions. His music is not nationalistic in the sense of employing the idioms of Czech folk music. Neuheit der Formen, ausgesuchte Modulationen, eigentümliche Klangfarben, den Einsatz völlig unerwarteter Rhythmen, lobte Camille Saint-Saëns am 22. Mai 1877 im Pariser Journal de Musique das Erstlingswerk eines jungen Kollegen, die erste Violinsonate von Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), und fuhr fort: "Über allem liegt ein Reiz, der das ganze Werk umfängt und die Menge der durchschnittlichen Hörer dahin bringt, die überraschendsten Kühnheiten als etwas ganz Natürliches zu akzeptieren." Der Kammermusik und den kleinen Formen galt auch weiterhin das besondere Interesse dieses wichtigen französischen Komponisten am Ende des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Faurés besondere Vorliebe galt dabei den Streichinstrumenten und hier vor allem dem Violoncello, für das er nicht nur zwei herrliche Sonaten, sondern auch kleinere solistische Werke geschrieben hat. Die "Berceuse" op.16 schrieb er 1878/79 für Violine; das vorliegende Arrangement lässt nun auch Violoncellisten in diesem einschmeichelnden und klangvollen Wiegenlied schwelgen.
