The final section goes through several themes and a key change; having an ornamented Baroque theme, then a Classical theme reminiscent of the opening, then concluding with a Romantic era toccata. English • German.Belgian cellist Jules de Swert was born on 15.8.1843 in Leuven; he died in Ostend on 24.2.1891. His first cello lessons were with his father in Leuven, then from 1856 to 1858 he studied with Adrien Francois Servais in Brussels. Immediately after completing his studies he embarked on a very successful concert tour across Denmark, Sweden and Germany. He then found employment in Düsseldorf, Weimar – and Berlin, where he was Director of Music at court and teacher at the Academy of Music. In Vienna he was then appointed principal cellist at the Imperial Opera and professor at the Vienna Conservatoire. In 1888 de Sweet returned to Belgium, where besides teaching at Conservatoires in Ghent and Bruges he also worked as a conductor. Despite his busy concert schedule and teaching commitments, Jules de Swert still found time for composition. Alongside original pieces for cello and piano as well as transcriptions (particularly of works by Chopin) he composed two cello concertos, several orchestral works and operas. This transcription of Chopin’s Valse in E minor was published in 1876 (plate no. 22003).

From 1850 to 1855 he was Director of Music at the Théâtre Français. He then found his own theatre to rent in Paris and put on highly successful productions of his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld (1858) and other stage works. During his lifetime he had twenty cello compositions published by Schott, among them the tutorial method Cours Méthodique de Duos pour deux Violoncelles op. 49 and various operatic arrangements for cello and piano based on themes by Bellini, Donizetti, Mozart and others - including this Fantaisie facile sur l’Opéra de Rossini: Le Barbier de Seville op. 71 in 1856 (plate no. 11461).

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and AntonÃn Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich's musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight'), written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled 'Lento', from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan KubelÃk played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème', and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

The theme of the original song Byeoljigi composed by Junhee Lim consists of a 16-bar melody, but this composer rearranged it to a 16-bar melody. the Korean pentatonic scale “Doremisola†is mostly used for the the melody. The overall framework is an introduction/theme and three variations/cadenza/finale/end. Through the theme, it creates a musical updraft until the second variation, and in the third variation, there is a relaxed atmosphere, and then a cadenza singing a conversation between a mother singing a lullaby and a baby enjoying in her dreams. The figure of the mother is the theme melody played with the G string, and the figure of the child is the cheerful high notes composed of the first five notes of the theme, “Mi re Do Re mi.†It then ends with a brilliant finale and a short ending.
