Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549838 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554481. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549838). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. &n.

Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522291 Composed by G F Handel. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Baroque,Easter,Holiday. Score and part. 6 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6632869. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522291). This piece is probably Handel’s best-known melody, although it began life as an operatic aria. The opera was called Xerxes, sometimes written Serses and pronounced something like “ZERT-seesâ€. It was commissioned by The King’s Theater in London and composed by Handel (who had become naturalized British and lived in London at the time) around 1737 and 1738. The opera is loosely based on the historical figure King Xerxes, who ruled from around 522-486 BC and was the fourth king of the Achaemenid Empire, a vast region that covered most of the present-day Middle East. The melody is often known simply as Handel’s Largo (despite being marked “Larghetto†in the musical score) and is the opening aria in the opera. The aria, known by its opening line Ombra mai fu is sung by Xerxes to a plane tree: “Tender and beautiful fronds of my beloved plane tree, let fate smile upon you...†Although this lovely melody has survived over the years, the opera itself was a complete failure when it was first performed in London in 1738. This arrangement is in G major and the cello part is written in the bass clef throughout. The top note is the G above the bass clef (G4) and the piece generally requires the use of long and sustained bowing (indicted in the score), though the cello fingering has been omitted. The piano part has been kept as simple as possible. Being so well-known, this piece would make a popular encore number for a cello recital.

Cello,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1493033 Composed by Clémence de Grandval. Arranged by Paul Wehage (édition). 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and part. 33 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #1069723. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1493033). Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris. After the death of her mother, Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarried with an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studies privately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns, who remember their first meeting: “I was 12 when I heard the vicomtesse de Grandval for the first time, who was 18. It was at a musical morning concert at the home of the violinist de Cuvillon. She sang a song of her own composition ‚La Source, in which she accompanied herself. I was struck by the fluidity of her playing, which purely and without useless inflections, was quite close to my way of viewing music. This unified and tranquil style came out of her studies with Chopin.” Camille Saint-Saëns: Quelques mots sur l’exécution des œuvres de Chopin, in: “Le courrier musical de Paris” 13 [1910], S. 386). At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chiefly known today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.

DR GARY D BELSHAW #3113025. Published by DR GARY D BELSHAW (A0.796626). How would you answer a 7-year-old's question, Where do we go when we die? This achingly beautiful melody is Billy Joel's answer. The hint of Medieval ambience came from Joel's plans to make this song part of a suite, with lyrics sung in Latin. The song has been covered more than 2 dozen times. Don't let our version become maudlin or morose; it's got plenty of meaning without getting gushy or sentimental. Perfect for any and every social occasion, as well as recitals and concerts.Thank you for considering this work; your impressions are valuable. Cello,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1280306 Composed by Brian Strohmetz. Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Score and part. 46 pages. Brian Strohmetz #871769. Published by Brian Strohmetz (A0.1280306). Around the Bend is a journey of tranquility, adventure, and discovery down a section of the Monocacy Creek in Bethlehem, PA. The first section of the music that appears throughout the piece is a simple melody that is reminiscent of a simple art song. It represents the river flowing along peacefully on a beautiful day. Occasionally, we come across an area where the water hits a small obstacle that causes the water to change its path and speed. We hear this as violent 16th note interruptions in the music. The river then returns to its natural flow and pace. Further along we encounter a small waterfall area with rapids and obstacles. The music cascades and has a rhythmic drive representing the rapids and the swift moving waters. After we have traversed the rapids, we return to the calm waters of the river as it continuously flows peacefully. The next portion of our journey is inspired by a specific and unique section of the Monocacy, where we find the hidden ivy. Trees surround the creek. When looking into them, at a certain angle, you will find a tree covered in ivy hidden amongst the other trees. When we reach this point in our journey, the music starts off mysteriously as though looking through the trees. When we find the hidden ivy, we are greeted by a majestic melody that reflects this hidden beauty. The piano plays a rising arpeggio repeatedly, reflecting the ivy’s goal to grow higher and closer to the sky. Once we pass the ivy, we return to the peacefully flowing river. We approach a bend in the river that we cannot see beyond. There is a bit of trepidation, but as we start to go around the bend, everything ends peacefully, and we know everything will be fine. The river will keep moving and we will survive. For Cello & Piano.

Cello,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548485 Composed by Gruber. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. Score and part. 3 pages. Jmsgu3 #3387043. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548485). Silent Night arranged for Cello & Piano with new harmony for the third verse. Score: 2 pg. Part: 1 pg. Silent Night Origins Father Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics for a new Christmas Carol. He wanted the new carol for his Christmas Eve Mass. With only a couple of hours until the service, He asked organist and schoolteacher Franz Gruber to write a melody and simple accompaniment to go with the lyrics. The result is probably the most famous of all Christmas carols – Silent Night. First Performance Perhaps because the organ was undergoing repairs, or to make sure the accompaniment was easy enough, Mohr asked Gruber to write it for the guitar. Mohr played the guitar, and both Mohr and Gruber gave the world premiere performance at the Christmas Eve Mass in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf in Salzburg. Original Score Eventually, the original score became lost, and consequently, Mohr's name was largely forgotten. Though the public originally recognized Gruber as the composer, many people over time began rumors that a more famous composer was responsible. Thus, they floated the names of Haydn, Mozart, and even Beethoven. Authorities eventually settled the matter when a manuscript in Mohr’s handwriting turned up in 1820. Consequently, we learn that Mohr wrote the lyrics in 1816, and Gruber composed the melody in 1818. Popularity Nonetheless, Silent Night is still very popular. Singers have performed this song in nearly every genre and in multiple languages. Perhaps the most famous version is the one Bing Crosby crafted. This version is the third best-selling physical single recording in the history of recorded music. This particular recording was released in 1935 and sold at least 30 million copies. Only two songs have ever sold more. Elton John released Candle in the Wind in 1997 and sold 33 million copies. The record for most copies ever sold goes to Bing Crosby. He released White Christmas in 1942 and sold 50 million physical copies. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1001505 By Rascal Flatts. By Kim Gannon and Walter Kent. Arranged by Justin K. Reeve. Contemporary. Score and part. 8 pages. Justin Kenlon Reeve #6662163. Published by Justin Kenlon Reeve (A0.1001505). Thousands of American men and women were serving overseas in 1943 when the world was at war, and they would be spending Christmas far from home. As a tribute to these heroes, Kim Gannon and Walter Kent created this lovely ballad, and Bing Crosby recorded it. The song's spirit and message touched the hearts of the soldiers and their families, and Crosby earned his 5th gold record from its success. The song was recorded by others later on, but on December 17, 1965 the Crosby recording was the first official song request to come from outer space. A NASA transmitter asked the astronauts aboard the Gemini 7 station if they had any special requests, and I'll Be Home for Christmas was their immediate choice.
