Cello,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1314243 Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period,Wedding. Score and part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #902984. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1314243). Saint-Saëns: The Swan (Le Cygne) movement 13 from the Carnival of the Animals Suite. One of his most popular and widely recognized works, it is the only movement from the Carnival Suite that Saint-Saëns permitted to be performed publicly during his lifetime. This is an excellent recital encore to demonstrate melodic playing and strategic phrasing. The Carnival of the AnimalsThe Carnival of the Animals is an entertaining musical suite of fourteen movements by Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was composed for private performance by an ensemble of two pianos and solo instruments. The Swan (No. 13) is among the fourteen most famous movements. In its entirety, it lasts about 25 minutes. Saint-Saëns BackgroundCharles-Camille Saint-Saëns 1835 – 1921) was, by all means, in particular, a famous French composer, brilliant organist, and significant musical mastermind of the Romantic era. Indeed, his most famous compositions, in the long run, include his Piano Concerto No. 2 (1868), Cello Concerto No. 1 (1872), and the Danse macabre (1874). Notwithstanding, we must also add Violin Concerto No. 3 (1880), Symphony No. 3 (the Organ Symphony, 1886), and, it must be remembered, Carnival of the Animals (1886) to the list. ChildhoodIt is essential to realize that Saint-Saëns was undoubtedly, in fact, a child musical prodigy. Consequently, with this in mind, he made his concert debut, albeit at ten years old. Another critical point to remember is that he expressly studied at the Paris Conservatoire, then, despite reality, conversely followed a traditional career path as a church organist. Nevertheless, twenty years later, on the other hand, he left to become a successful freelance pianist and composer despite, as has been noted, his former employment situation. Furthermore, his performances were, after all, markedly in demand - not only in Europe but, above all, in the Americas all in all as well. YouthA point often overlooked is that in his youth, Saint-Saëns was undoubtedly excited about the modern music of the day. He was, in essence, fond of the music of his contemporaries, particularly Schumann, Liszt, and, for the most part, Wagner. In contrast, however, his compositions seemed, in fact, primarily confined within the conservative classical tradition. Be that as it may, he was, at the same time, nevertheless, a scholar of musical history.CriticismOn the whole, his conservatism, in fact, ultimately brought him into frequent conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and, in particular, the dodecaphonic schools of musical thought. A point often overlooked is that he included neoclassical elements in his music, contrary to some critics. Furthermore, in so doing, he provided the most compelling evidence that he predicted the techniques and works by Stravinsky and Les Six. To put it another way, given these points, he was regarded, perhaps for the most part unfairly, as a non-progressive reactionary henceforth around the time of his passing. LegacySaint-Saëns taught briefly in Paris, where his students included Gabriel Fauré. Maurice Ravel later studied with Fauré. In conclusion, both Ravel and Fauré were powerfully influenced by Saint-Saëns, whom they respected as a musical mastermind.

Cello,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549572 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 18 pages. Jmsgu3 #3508693. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549572). Duration: ca. 2:17 Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 5 pages. A proven audience pleaser - perfect for a recital encore! Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Cello,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549440 Composed by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #3494673. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549440). Score: 7 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Duration: 4:25. Not difficult, but requires sensitivity & dynamic control. Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs. School Years First of all, Sullivan attended music school at the Royal Academy of Music. Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic operas such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, and 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. Lost Chord The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883.  Â

Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549329). Duration: ca. 3:00, score: 5 pages, solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages.Very famous song suitable for church, recital or nightclub. I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and made famous by Barry Manilow. Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976[2] after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975.[3] It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977.[3] Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976.[4]The original version was recorded by The Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with The Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album, Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by then teen-idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Bruce Johnston. Cassidy's version reached #11 on the UK Singles Chart in August of that year.[5]Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God,[2] and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in all of us. He has said that the song is not about his Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson.[6]Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.[3] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of I Write the Songs was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976. Wikipedia

Cello,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549815 Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Children,Christmas,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 48 pages. Jmsgu3 #3545601. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549815). Duration: 6:12, Score: 29 pages, Solo part: 6 pages, Piano part: 12 pages. This is the grand finale of the Nutcracker Suite. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet that was performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

A popular Christmas favorite from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Piano Accompaniment, Dan CutchenTime: approximately 6:00And Can It Be That I Should Gain? is a Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley. And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year. This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring. And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). On Whitsunday (Pentecost), May 21, 1738, three days before his brother John experienced his heart strangely warmed,’ Charles was convalescing in the home of John Bray, a poor mechanic, when he heard a voice saying, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise, and believe, and thou shalt be healed of all thy infirmities. The voice was most likely Mr. Bray’s sister who felt commanded to say these words in a dream.Anglican hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith, notes that the following then happened:Charles got out of bed and opening his Bible read from the Psalms: He have put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, followed by the first verse of Isaiah 40, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. No matter its place in the chronology of Wesley's output, And Can It Be has been and remains one of his most remarkable hymns, expressing like no other the rapturous joy of receiving salvation. And Can It Be That I Should Gain. Large Ensemble Cello,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.889878 Composed by Gary Friedman. Contemporary,Jewish,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 66 pages. Gary Friedman #11999. Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889878). The original version for cello and piano was my first formal composition when I started composing in 1998. When my brother, Ralph, heard it, he cried and said that he wished that my parents could have heard it, too. The form and harmonies of this piece are mostly traditional, but there are a few surprises. There is a cantorial cello cadenza. A trumpet and tuba are added to the usual chamber orchestra with piano, just to play an Oh My Darling Clementine counter-melody in one variation but flute and bassoon have cues and can do this nicely. The recording of the beautifully expressive performance by Ken Hoppe and the College of Marin Symphony conducted by Tara Flandreau (who edited the string parts) is of such poor sound quality that I have uploaded the computer playback as the sound clip, which is of course quite mechanical sounding. However, if you would like to hear the live performance the YouTube link is ?v=6RHrLVqTyZg The cello and piano duet version is included in this package but is also sold separately for $5.00. Duration: 8 minutes Year: 1998.

Piano Accompaniment, Cello - Early Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Traditional Italian. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. Romantic Period, Movies, TV, Folk, Recital. Score, Solo Part. 6 pages. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha
"Bella ciao" ("Goodbye beautiful") is an Italian protest folk song that originated in the hardships of the mondina women, the paddy field workers in the late 19th century who sang it to protest against harsh working conditions in the paddy fields of North Italy. The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the anti-fascist resistance by the Italian partisans between 1943 and 1945 during the Italian Resistance, the resistance of Italian partisans against the Nazi German forces occupying Italy, and, during the Italian Civil War, the Italian partisan struggle against the fascist Italian Social Republic and its Nazi German allies. Versions of "Bella ciao" are sung worldwide as an anti-fascist hymn of freedom and resistance.

In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano.

Cello and piano - intermediate - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q11672 Composed by George Goltermann. This edition: Sheet music. Cello Library. Downloadable. Op. 54/3. Schott Music - Digital #Q11672. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11672). Key: A minor.Goltermann (1824-1898) left a plethora of works for his instrument, including seven cello concertos which sometimes go to the limits of what was considered to be technically playable in his time. Even today, these works have maintained their importance throughout the methodological progress in literature. Apart from the concertos, Goltermann also composed a large number of character pieces, including romances, reveries, nocturnes and serenades. Stylistically wholly rooted in the Romantic spirit of their time, the pieces are relatively short and of medium difficulty as regards the technical demands. It is not least due to their melodic and harmonic catchiness that they enjoy a lasting popularity both in music lessons and in domestic concerts.

The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance. Duration with repeat - 4:50. Score: 7 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6732). Deep Slavic emotions and gripping virtuosity - that's what characterizes many compositions by Rodion Shchedrin. Even if he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born composer nevertheless remains an originally Russian composer whose attachment to Russian music folklore and poetry has never been broken off. This tradition also shows in 'Belcanto', which was commissioned by the renowned Verbier Festival and premiered by the dedicatee Mischa Maisky, together with the composer on the piano. The cello part mainly maintains a cantabile character, while the piano accompanies and comments the vocal part with varied transparent sounds and figures.

Cello and piano - easy to intermediate - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q11665 Arranged from the original version for Mandolin and Piano. Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Julius Berger. This edition: Sheet music. Cello Library. Downloadable. Schott Music - Digital #Q11665. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11665). Key: C minor. In 1796 Beethoven travelled to Prague where he met the Countess Josephine of Clary-Aldringen (later Countess Clamm-Gallas) who played the mandolin. For her, he wrote several works for mandolin and piano, four of which are still extant and have been arranged by Julius Berger for violoncello and piano. As Beethoven had written pieces for a mandolin tuned to G-D-A-E, it was unproblematic to transcribe them for the violoncello. The arrangements are written in the original keys and keep as close to the original as possible. These elegant works are little shining gems. Headed 'Adagio' and written in one movement at first, 'Sonatina' WoO 43a in the tragic C minor key with a bright C major section in the middle is followed by a marvellous 'Adagio ma non troppo' WoO 43b of religious depth.

Cello,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1493033 Composed by Clémence de Grandval. Arranged by Paul Wehage (édition). 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and part. 33 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #1069723. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1493033). Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris. After the death of her mother, Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarried with an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studies privately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns, who remember their first meeting: “I was 12 when I heard the vicomtesse de Grandval for the first time, who was 18. It was at a musical morning concert at the home of the violinist de Cuvillon. She sang a song of her own composition ‚La Source, in which she accompanied herself. I was struck by the fluidity of her playing, which purely and without useless inflections, was quite close to my way of viewing music. This unified and tranquil style came out of her studies with Chopin.” Camille Saint-Saëns: Quelques mots sur l’exécution des œuvres de Chopin, in: “Le courrier musical de Paris” 13 [1910], S. 386). At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chiefly known today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.
