Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. It reflects the culture, customs, and emotions of each region and has diverse content and rhythm. “Monggeumpo Taryeong(It is also called “Jangsangot Taryeong)†is a traditional Korean folk song handed down from the Hwanghae region. “Monggeumpo†is a port, and the beach here is famous for its white sandy beaches, lush forests, and Rosa rugosa flowers. The content of this folk song consists of a sad melody and lyrics, and it contains the joys and sorrows of the fishermen's lives and the sorrowful feelings waiting for the safe return of a loved one who went out to catch fish. This music is composed in the A-B-A format. The sad part is located in the middle of the music, and the beginning and end parts were composed in an exciting atmosphere. It is usually played to the traditional Korean “jungmori†rhythm, which is also quoted throughout the piece. The attached music file was played on the violin and only the first part was played. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.Christmas Repertoire Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder. Origins No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then. Traffic Signals Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce. Social Context Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells. My grandmother, Adriana Verdonk-Romijn, was born in 1923, on a ship that was first named Baronie then Spes Salutes. Her family lived on the ship which they used to transport cargo in and around the Netherlands. During World War II, they were carrying a load of straw and were spotted by ally aircraft. The pilots thought that it was a German boat and began firing. The straw caught fire, and to save as much of the boat as possible, the Romijn family pumped it full of water and sunk it. Later, they brought it up again and started to refurbish it. However, the local community was afraid that the Germans would attack via u-boats, and they decided to sink the ship at the mouth of the harbour. After the war, the ship was brought up for a second time and reinhabited by the Romijn family. In 1988 the ship was christened the Aldebaran by a new owner and is now a tourist attraction. This piece is not about these events, but rather, about the ship as it carried my family to various destinations. Although it is only a vessel made of lifeless materials, I almost think of it as a hero and veteran. CREDITS: Performance by Sharon Wei (viola) & Angela Park (piano) Performed on March 4, 2021.
