The name Nocturne (meaning of the night) was originally an ensemble piece in the 18th century in several movements used for for evening parties. Later In the 19thc it's one movement form, it was adopted by John Field and later popularised by Chopin. It generally has a tranquil lyrical melody and is very romantic and expressive. I have tried to keep these elements in this Nocturne. Written here for Clarinet in B flat, Viola and Piano, the parts are equally divided. Highest note top D flat ( clarinet once). Bowing for the viola has been left to the performer. It is written in the key of concert B flat minor it has a very gentle opening with harmonies evolving around a cycle of 5th's in places. The piece has three definite sections- the lyrical melody to begin with, a middle section building to a climax before a return to the 1st section. This is followed by a transitional contrasting section (poco piu mosso) wandering through a few keys to settle on an inner pedal tonic note chime. Gentle chords restore the opening once more- this opening theme climaxes towards the end and a gentle reflection of the opening bars concludes the piece. It is 4 mins 20 in length. Versions for Flute Duet, Flute and Clarinet Duet and Solo Piano are also available, as is Flute, Bassoon and Piano ensemble.

The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since. This version is arranged as a solo for Viola and Piano.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, especially at weddings. The melody is mainly in the solo part. The performance time is a little more than one minute. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet version of this arrangement.Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with phrasing and expressive playing. The rhythms are straightforward though there are unexpected accidentals in the middle section which might pose a challenge for finger coordination and reading. The top note for the viola is the A above the staff (A5) but this occurs only once. The piece is for intermediate viola players who are comfortable in the upper range of the instrument. The treble clef is used for the middle section of the piece and the piano part is quite accessible. It's a slow, dreamy piece which is ideal for the intermediate viola player. It would make a good recital piece or could be effective as a relaxing encore.

Diego Marani #872004. Published by Diego Marani (A0.1280592). One of the better known nocturnes, this piece has a rhythmic freedom that came to characterize Frédéric Chopin's later work. The piece is 85 measures long and in 6/4 meter is written in ternary form; after the primary theme, the secondary theme starts in measure 19, followed by a modified version of the primary theme in measure 70. The opening section moves into a contrasting middle section in the same key signature, which flows back to the opening material in a transitional passage. The reprise of the first section grows out of this, followed by a Picardy third ending.This arrangement for viola with piano accompaniment reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for any purpose and occasion.

Keith Terrett has done an outstanding job of injecting jazz and blues into these holiday favorites. The writing beginning in measure 13 of Ding Dong Merrily On High is outstanding. Check out the wonderful contrast in movement between the flute and bass. This arrangement of Xmas carols would be a wonderful addition to any future holiday program. Well done Keith! Have fun! Caroling (singing carols in the street) is one of the oldest customs in Great Britain, going back to the Middle Ages when beggars, seeking food, money, or drink, would wander the streets singing holiday songs.

The opera was called Xerxes, sometimes written Serses and pronounced something like “ZERT-seesâ€. It was commissioned by The King’s Theater in London and composed by Handel (who had become naturalized British and lived in London at the time) around 1737 and 1738. The opera is loosely based on the historical figure King Xerxes, who ruled from around 522-486 BC and was the fourth king of the Achaemenid Empire, a vast region that covered most of the present-day Middle East. The melody is often known simply as Handel’s Largo (despite being marked “Larghetto†in the musical score) and is the opening aria in the opera. The aria, known by its opening line Ombra mai fu is sung by Xerxes to a plane tree: “Tender and beautiful fronds of my beloved plane tree, let fate smile upon you...†Although this lovely melody has survived over the years, the opera itself was a complete failure when it was first performed in London in 1738. This arrangement is in G major and the top note is the G above the alto clef (G5) and the piece generally requires the use of long and sustained bowing (indicted in the score), though the viola fingering has been omitted. The piano part has been kept as simple as possible. Being so well-known, this piece would make a popular encore number for a viola recital.

The famous Golliwogg’s Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Children’s Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908. The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The present arrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for melodic instrument with accompaniment.

There is, however, some syncopation in keeping with the original melody, but nothing out-of-reach for a competent performer. Â The piano accompaniment is reasonably simple: a somewhat active L.H. part with chord comping in the R.H.

It is written in the original key of D minor and switches between 12/8 and 4/4 time for ease of reading rhythms. The piano part is a true accompaniment and does not double the viola part at all throughout the piece. The 4/4 section switches between alto and treble clef in the viola part and requires some shifting to 3rd position. This would make an excellent piece for an electric instrument, especially in the middle section, which has a grunge vibe to it. The PDF download contains both a full score and a set of individual parts - Viola and Piano.
