Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1451085). The opera, Prince Igor written by Alexander Borodin was first performed in 1890 after many years of delay. It is possibly his greatest and boldest work with many beautiful melodies coming forth, especially the Chorus and Dance of the Polovetsian Maidens from Act II. The music has a mysterious Eastern sound which is very captivating. There is nothing like this written for Horn and Piano and Mr. Sauer’s arrangement is wonderful. This work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.

The Intermezzo & Farandole by Georges Bizet are both from the 2nd L'Arlésienne Suite arranged by Guiraud in 1879, four years after Bizet's untimely death.The Intermezzo is slow and powerful, whereas the Farandole, which incorporates the theme from the March of the Kings is fast and bouncy.Mr. Sauer's excellent arrangement for horn and piano is a joy to perform. The 6-minute suite of two movements is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Spanish Dances are named Oriental and Fandango. They are taken from the 12 Danzas Españolas, Volume I from 1890, for Piano. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the Solo Piano part and divided it between Solo Horn and Piano. Performers will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the Solo repertoire.The two dances are about six and a half minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

It consists of a theme and eight variations, plus a grand finale. It was written in two forms, one for two pianos and the more well-known orchestral version.There is a musicological controversy as to whether the theme is actually from the pen of Haydn or another mystery composer. Some are now referring to it as the Saint Anthony Variations. Nevertheless, this 18-minute work by Brahms is a magnificent work of genius.Not to be outdone, Mr. Sauer has created his own masterpiece of this work, arranged for virtuoso artists of the Horn and Piano.
