Gordon Cherry #3676421. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810900). The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire.The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano.

They are his reminiscences of childhood and have been beautifully scored for Tuba or Bass Trombone & Piano by Ralph Sauer. The most well known of the movements is Tråumerei (Dreaming) and has been used in movies to portray love scenes because of its tenderness and beauty. The music is for advanced performers and the collection contains close to 20 minutes of some very sublime & poetic music. Any of these pieces can be inserted into a recital program.

Liszt was very impressed with the young Glazunov and arranged to have his 1st Symphony performed in Weimar. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Tuba and Piano. Tubists will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Rêverie and Sérénade. The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music. After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite. The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle. Advanced performers will enjoy this work which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

The music is based on Edward Lavine, a famous vaudeville performer whose act was presented at the Marigny Theatre around the same time. It is the only work by Debussy composed as a musical portrait for a human personality. The music of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

The work was influenced by a traditional dance used to worship the fire-god where the participants involved would jump or leap through fire. Candela, a gypsy girl performs this Ritual Fire Dance causing a ghost to appear. She begins to dance with the ghost whirling faster and faster until the ghost is pulled into the fire, causing it to disappear. This brilliant arrangement of about four and one half minutes is written for advanced performers.
